Well deserved. Can make an argument others may be having good enough seasons to join him, but, he's the clear first choice.

The new format and one guy per team rule really makes it tough for worthy guys to crack the squad.

The Atlantic division forwards are such garbage. Trocheck (24th among Atlantic forwards in scoring) and Nielsen (30th) make the team so everyone feels included.

The Nielsen one was especially weird. He's not even the Red Wings #1 or #2 scorer.

Also, remember all of that "Dylan Larkin is better than Willy Nylander" stuff? Since the All-Star game last year Larkin has 27 points in 72 games.

Well Zetterberg probably declined I'm guessing. But Nielsen over Vanek is definitely strange, especially since Vanek is having a hell of a come-back season. Scoring at a 70-point pace over 82 games (missed 11 games due to injury). Nielsen's on pace for 45.

Vanek would definitely have been the better choice - though, he could have declined, as well citing injury concerns and such. After that, I mean, I'd lean towards choosing Mantha, but, I get going with a vet who's played the full year over a guy who started the season in the AHL - I don't agree with it, but I get it.

The cap dollars saved by shuttling Bibeau back and forth between the NHL/AHL helps pay for stuff like this. Also sending down Michalek, Laich, and Greening of course.

I noticed this about Matthews during the World Championships and the World Cup. He usually takes a couple of games to assess the competition, figure out how much he can do in it, and then just does it. If there's something that he wants to do, but currently cannot, he figures out what is required and then puts in the work to get there.

He's very vocal with his line, and directs the game flow with his communication and play. The beauty of it all is that he thinks the game at a crazy high level AND has the physical capabilities to match what he envisions doing.
 
That's great, if there's anyone NOT in danger of getting a big head it's Auston. Dude lives with his dad in downtown Toronto. 19 going on 42. Leafs not only won the lottery, but the character lottery as well.

How many 42 year olds live with their dad? :) (sorry) I know what you mean. He has a cool temperament. More confident than arrogant.

I like that about Matthews.  Character guys are good to have.  Sure in the end talent wins out, and you can have the biggest jerk as a person become a star in the league, but when you have the talent AND the character, those guys that are truly remembered as the greats.  I like the quiet confidence that this guy exudes.  He knows he's good, but he's not arrogant about it (or at least doesn't show that)
 
Congratulations to Awesome Auston Matthews!

Not only is he multi-talented on the ice, but off it as well, through his attitude, character, sense of maturity, and his excitement to be a Leaf and to be the best. 

Matthews and Marner are the magicians of this team!
