Cell Phones

I've got a Samsung S3 on Bell.  I can't get the battery to last all day, no matter what I do to try and conserve battery (take it off wireless when not home, have it on reduced brightness, keep it off satellite tracking, etc etc)

I'm thinking of trying one of those thicker batteries that some places sell.  Any thoughts?

Couple questions:

1) Is the phone an LTE phone?
2) Do you use data or just voice?

LTE is power-hungry, big-time.  If you don't need it, you should be able to disable it (if you use data, it'll be slower on a 3G network, hence, why I asked 2).  By getting off LTE, you should save power.

Hmm.  What's LTE?  I was looking online at a 3-day battery from Amazon called ZeroLemon.  It's bulky, but would do what I'm needing.

LTE is the cell band it uses.  It will indicate at the top if it's using LTE, 4G, etc.  Some believe it uses more power.. not so sure about that.  I find if the phone constantly is switching between the various bands (mine does this at the office all day long) it will drain the battery quickly.

I have the same phone and generally find it's just about how much you use it.  These phones with the large screens eat batteries for breakfast when in use.  If you use it a lot you might want to go with the big battery.  It's a big add-on though.

The Galaxy S3 is an LTE phone. It's just a question of if the phone is connection to the LTE network or the 3G.

Federal governmerit intent on letting in some competition in the wireless communications field --  one that may see U.S. wireless giant Verizon coming to Canada -- much to the consternation and concern of Bell, Rogers, and Telus, as you know, Canada's three largest wireless communications companies.

So much so, that Bell took out a full-page advertisement in the Toronto Star recently, in the form of an "open letter to Canadians" voicing it's deep concern over the potentiality of having a large foreign (in his case, U.S.) competitor in the Canadian market for reasons it explains.

However, a former university student from the provirice of Manitoba countered with a corresponding letter to Bell's CEO George Cope, challenging with (polite) faotual counter-arguments pertaining to some  points ascertained by Bell in their so-called "letter to Canadians".

Here is Ben Klass' reply to Bell's "letter":

What does everyone think?  Would you be concern ed with having Verizon here as a major player in the wireless communicatians field to increase competition in Canada?

We need as many options as possible. The big 3 are nothing but big corporations that could care less about the average Canadian. The workers there are good people, but the management is adament on screwing over Canadians with fewer options for more money and they do nothing but lie about the reasons for this and patronize us for it like in this letter.

I'm glad I have no services with Bell, Rogers or Telus.

...the CEP [insert→ Communications, Energy, and Paperworkers Union] accused the Harper government of going on an ?ideological crusade? with its insistence that telecoms be opened up to foreign investors."If the government is really concerned about protecting wireless consumers why not simply regulate pricing and contract rules," Coles said.

"Instead they are hell bent on foreign ownership of this country's telco sector, which is bad for Canada's workers, security and culture."The CEP is also concerned about Verizon?s relations with its 45,000 unionized workers in the U.S. The Communications Workers of America have launched a campaign against the company, accusing it of attacking the middle class, dodging taxes and opposing consumer rights, among many other things.

"Verizon has been caught spying on the Communications Workers of America, selling marketers disturbingly detailed information on its subscribers and it even charges the U.S. government $500 a month for each wiretap it places on its customers," Coles said last month. "This gives a whole new meaning to Verizon's 'share everything' plan."

Got an iPhone 5 a few days ago to replace my 2 and a half year old Blackberry Curve. The only question I'm asking myself is why I didn't switch 2 years ago. Aside from a few small hangups I love the iPhone.

What do you think about not having a qwerty keyboard?  That's one of my hesitations for switching.

It has a qwerty keyboard - it's just a touch screen rather than a physical one.

I've been off a physical keyboard for about a year, I've gotten used to it for the most part

I don't like the touchscreen keyboard built into iOS, I'm not sure if they allow third party keyboard apps. The third party one I use for my android phone is great though.

Obviously I prefer the blackberry keyboard but the touch screen isn't as bad as I anticipated. I screw up WAY more on the iPhone than I did with the blackberry, and the voice control button is very poorly placed right beside the space bar making me hit it all the time, but I'm fairly sure I'll get more used to it as time goes on. Overall it's not that bad.

Verizon Wireless "not interested" in coming to Canada...

Does anyone have any insight as to when the newest iphone will be hitting the canadian market.  Heard earlier reports it is being released on Sept 10.  Any truth?

Most reports have it coming late September/early October. If it was coming September 10th, we'd have heard by now. As things stand right now, they'll only  be announcing it next week.

Apple's going to be announcing it on Sept. 10. And according to reported vacation blackout dates the phone will likely be released Sept. 20.
