Contracts for the Big-3

If he doesn't sign, the Leafs have about $12 million in cap space left to make deals with at the trade deadline. They could potentially bring in d-man and a forward for a cup run this year, if making a deal for Nylander or other assets. If it was a deal for other assets. The Leafs could potentially trade Nylander later to replace those lost assets. So Nylander not signing today, doesn't mean they get nothing for a cup run this year - they get $12 million in cap space to do something.

If Nylander under contract for a long term at his number isn't happening and a medium/bridge term at the Leafs number isn't in the cards, their best move, IMO, would be to put most of that $12 toward Nylander on a one-year deal and kick the can down the road. The base salary could be set at a tolerable starting point for a future negotiation ($6.5-6.75m?) and the balance paid out as a nice bonus to smooth over hard feelings.

Nylander would get on the team, which is what'll have the biggest possible impact on their chances this season... which is an important consideration, since the defense is going to be worse next season and this might be their best chance for the next couple years.

Still kind of hoping there's a fit with St. Louis. They're in a bit of a mess, and might be desperate enough to do something a little lopsided in the toronto direction.

*never mind, parayko scored the game winner last night, and Pietrangelo out with a hand injury. Nothing going to happen there anytime soon. Meh.

Oops, my bad.. not sure where I read the 8.1??

That?s roughly the threshold for 2 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd. Hasn?t been that low for 4 1sts in a few years.

Here?s the current numbers: https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2018/05/2018-offer-sheet-compensation.html

Rinse, repeat, spin, wash.  I just can't see this not getting done. This is finally our time and to be quite frank, I have waited all of my adult life to see the Leafs becoming a dream team.  Like all of us.

Hey guys, been lurking for several years now. :)

Anxious to learn what happens today. Forgive me for not reading all 145 pages of this thread. In my defence I did read the first 60 or so.

I think it's a real shame that Nylander senior seems to be the driving force behind this impasse. He's a guy who played an average of 2 years on any one team and definitely not a team player, so I'm actually pretty pessimistic on the chances a deal will get worked out. But maybe that's ok. The Leafs' play this season doesn't seem to have suffered without him, and I'd far rather we keep our cap space for Matthews and Marner. And whatever dressing room chemistry they seem to have. No one needs some disgruntled player who feels like he's been ripped off.

I'm not too concerned about trade options either. In the cap era, you don't lose players "for nothing" anymore because you gain all that cap space.

Willy and/or his dad have drastically overestimated his value, which considering his lacklustre playoff performance has yet to be proven. What I saw then was a skilled but soft player who was easily shut down by physical play, and unable to turn it up a notch.

He should take a short term deal, like 2 years. If he's as sh*t hot as he thinks he is, he can come back to the table once he has proven his worth.

In what world is sitting out better for both sides than one year at, say, $7 million?

Well, if you're Nylander and you think part of the reason why the Leafs are lowballing you is the way they've chosen to use you then if you come back and have a subpar 2/3rd's of a season you theoretically aren't in as strong a negotiating position with whoever you do negotiate a long term deal with.

But I think the real answer there is that if the relationship has soured then maybe pride is more important for both sides at this point.

At this point I don't see anything happening. It strikes me as pretty unusual that either side would be waiting until the literal last minute to change their mind about something already on the table.

I agree, and I think Dubas would be setting himself up for this again if he came in at the last minute with something better.

The Leafs' final offer has likely been on the table for some time.

Then why haven't they come out and said he's not signing? What's the point of waiting until the deadline is passed to say he's not playing if that decision has already been made?

I would think that there's nothing official until 5pm.

I think it?s in Willy?s court now and it?s going to be up to him to say yea or nay and he does have until that 5 pm.
