David Clarkson - Signs with Maple Leafs

What a ridiculous contract for such an overrated player! This contract has early buyout written all over it.

Wtf are Nonis and his band of 'great hockey minds thinking?  I would take Grabbo and Frattin in my line-up any day over Bozak and Clarkson!  Not liking how this roster is shaping up at all.... No longer built around team speed apparently.

Huh. Sounds like big boys who run into things a lot are best drafted and kept through their RFA contracts, not signed as UFAs.

Good thing guys like Gauthier and Biggs are in the system then.

Carlyle wants him to be a power forward standing in front of the net, no fancy plays. Remember, everyone has the exact role and any deviation from Randy?s course is forbidden and not tolerated.

Uh, ok, but he still is a skilled hockey player.

I heard Kessel doesn't play the so called "tough and nothing else" style of play.  He's done pretty good under Randy.

Yeah. Lupul's not soft but he's not a bruiser either.

JVR, Kadri, Gardiner.... weird so skill guys can thrive under Carlyle.  Huh.

3 things:

1. How is he overrated? Specifically what makes you confident in saying that?

2. 30 NHL teams didn't want anything to do with Grabbo on that contract.  Does that not tell you something? You'd rather have a guy nobody else wants?

3. Who said Clarkson is slow? Incorrect. Did Bozak get slower last week? As I recall speed is one of his biggest assets.

I will say this though. One of the reasons that I've been pretty pro-Nonis is that everything he's done has struck me as being really conservative. The moves he's made where he's added assets were all ones where I think he paid a very reasonable price. Buying out Grabo, buying out Komisarek, trading for Bolland....all of those struck me as "slow and steady win the race" sort of moves.

This contract is the first move of his I don't feel that way about. This strikes me as a bit of a swing for the fence. My gut reaction isn't to love that sort of thing. Clarkson might be a good player and he might fit in well but I don't like the downside here. This is the first move of Nonis' that I can say that about.

His stats page.

Wouldn't use this as a judge of anything on UFA day. 29 other teams didn't want Clarkson at that price or term.

Don't know about Clarkson's speed, but surely you must recall how 1st line entered the zone all last year. If Bozak's speed is one of his 'biggest assets' it's because he doesn't frequently take passes or make them.

Maybe the hometown discount made it more of a slow and steady move in Nonis' mind. I assume it's the length that has you at odds?

So nobody else wanted Clarkson at that price or term because....they didn't also sign him? Seriously, what in the world is the basis for that?

Not to mention, as Deebo points out, other teams offered him more.

No, well, not just that. Whatever discount Clarkson gave the Leafs I still think that his status as perhaps the most desirable UFA has inflated his value to the point that he's still overpriced.

Yeah, I don't disagree with that, but he's less overpriced for us. And 5.25 seems manageable for 25 goals and some toughness, assuming he hits those lofty goals.

I think I'll really like his game, but man that still seems like a lot of dough for this guy.

He was apparently quite coveted, so I'll reserve judgement until the end of his first shift.
