Deadline day thread

I really feel like nothing of significance is going to happen for the leafs today.

I'm guessing one guy with term (Phaneuf, Lupul, Bozak, Polak, most likely Polak) and one guy without (Jokinen, Booth, uh.. Holzer?, most likely Jokinen) are traded.

I think that's a fair guess.

I was thinking, with these GM's trading first rounders of a good draft like drunks, that if Nonis can't get much done, either it underscores his ineptness at this deadline or the fact that he's signed a collection of untradeable slugs/contracts. Take your pick. I suspect he's toast anyway but it's not going to go good for him if he doesn't get more done in this desperate trading climate.

What the hell? Coburn gets a 1st a 3rd and Gudas from Tampa.

Apparently the Leafs wanted that 1st for Polak

God you gotta shop Dion if that's the package Coburn gets.

I don't think they're comparable with the $ and term on Phaneuf's deal, but that Coburn return is insane.

Connolly also went for 2 second rounders? WTF?

So Lupul is worth a 1st for sure if we retain salary IMO.

Ron Wilson was pretty funny on TSN there, getting a hearty hate on for the Leafs. His tongue was placed firmly in his cheek, I enjoyed the segment.

Devils apparently in the market for a top-6 winger with term. Sounds like Lupul to me!

Well, I'm five minutes into watching Sportsnet when I'm reminded of just how ridiculously dumb the coverage of today is. They're employing roughly 82,000 former players, GMs and studio meatheads and they just had some woman on reading tweets about trades from fans. Not funny, insightful tweets mind you but like "The Flyers paid a high price for Coburn" sorts of tweets.

Probably 15-20 trades (I'm guessing a little on the low side because they've been so active in the days leading up to today) and they've got about 9 hours of air time to kill. And you know about 80% are little 4th liner/AHL depth guys for a 7th round pick type deals - not really worth discussing. So you're looking at 2 hours or so on each "significant" deal beyond that ... that's ugly (as it often always is).

And it's being filled by a parade of deadheads like Jeff O'Neill ...

Pick your favorite link with the sound off and periodically refresh quietly (if it doesn't have autorefresh) ....

:)

Reporting for duty, had this nasty stomach flu over the weekend (affected the entire family) so working from home today.  Of course given it's deadline day nobody believes that I'm convalescing.  Oh well.

Unfortunately, Leafs can't because they retained a little salary on three other deals (the limit). They'd have to take a bad deal back.

Just Winnik and Gunnarsson. They didn't retain anything on Franson/Santorelli.

The Leafs made quite a few of us sick this weekend sir, glad to hear you're on the mend.

Sportsnet is running a "40% chance Phaneuf gets traded today" item on their ticker. You know it's scientific if there's a number attached!

Yeah I was under the impression we still had one contract we could retain salary on.....

I thought there was a third ... can't recall for sure - might be mixing it up with Gleason buyout ..

If that's accurate (and you usually are), then they have a good shot for doing at least one significant deal for young assets - almost no excuses.

Lupul said during that HBO Winter classic show last year that he could see himself living in New York.

The commute from there to NJ isn't too bad.

Make it happen.

A few places mentioning that the Wings want Toronto to retain 2 million of Dion's contract, some significant young assets would be coming back as well as 1st round pick.

Toronto is reluctant to eat salary.

A 1st or two 2nds, which they have. I think that could work. Maybe we could take back somebody like Zubrus. Or you know what, Ryane Clowe has almost $15mil left on his contract and might never play again...

Which is the lesser of two evils here? TSN or Sportsnet?

Can we just have Bob McKenzie and Elliot Friedman do a stand alone show?

Neither. If you have to pick one, I'd say TSN. They at least have Ron Wilson being hilarious.
