Draft Pick Watch - WE PICKED NYLANDER!!1!!

L K said:
I don't think I would blow the 8th overall pick on him though.  If the Leafs found a way to get a 2nd 1st round pick in the 10-20 range, sure, I'd jump at that kind of talent, but I wouldn't put all my eggs in that basket.

I don't think anybody is saying we should pick him at 8.

Looking at 3 different mock drafts on NHL.com. 3 different picks for the Leafs at #8. Ritchie, Fleury, and Perlini

Fascinating article.

Simmons got it right for once: hockey is run by conformists.

And, I think, that may be a far more important thing to take away from this than just the particular fate of Ho-Sang himself. The idea that you would pass on an important asset that you get to control until they're 25, at least, because of things they say as an 18 year old is ridiculous.

Especially those types of things. Teenage athletes are often cocky - especially when they're among the better players in their age group. Who cares if he ruffles a few feathers as long as he backs it up on the ice?

But that's the thing: He has to back it up. Its all well and good to say you'll be the best in three years but how much is he overly cocky and how much is he saying he's willing to put in effort? Obviously you have to see the kid play first, but I'd look out for effort and hard work vs. sitting on laurels based on talent level.

We don't want another Kyle Wellwood.

Well, obviously, but, he also wouldn't be talked about as a potential 1st round pick if he hadn't so far. He's shown a high skill level and, at the very least, a reasonable amount of effort on the ice. That's not to say he'll definitely do the same at the pro level, but, a lot of guys can't make things work at the pro level, and effort is only one of many possible reasons why that's so.

And, for what it's worth, Wellwood was never touted as a potential 1st round pick (at least, certainly not this close to the draft - if at all). There's really no comparison between the two in that way.

Kyle Wellwood had a pretty good career for a 5th round pick.

So will Ho-Sang

Too true. Who ever heard of little guys with big attitudes making good in the NHL.

This is from Pierre Lebrun's blog about the possibility of Tallon trading down:

"Not much new," Tallon told ESPN.com. "There?s some offers from teams in the middle of the pack. But I want to stay top 10 if I can."

To move down, Tallon would want an established player that fits into his team?s young core. Plus, as he said, he still wants to pick in the top 10.

Right now, that offer isn?t there.

"We?re in a good spot. We?ll take the pick if nobody steps up," said Tallon, who expected the offers to get more serious as we get close to Friday evening?s first round.

I think, if you read that the way I do, you get a good sense of why teams don't tend to trade out of the #1 spot. What Tallon wants is probably more valuable than the #1 pick. I'm sure Ekblad will be a great player but if you had to trade the equivalent of, say, a Ryan O'Reilly and a top 10 pick?

Would the Leafs 8th overall plus Kadri make that happen?..I wouldn't mind a 2nd rounder coming back in that deal.

I don't think Kadri would fit most people's definition of an established player. He's played one and a half productive seasons and I don't think we have a great grasp on just what he is as a player.

And Florida's second pick wouldn't be a throw in for a deal like that. Florida's second round pick is basically a low first-rounder.

Isn't the rumor floating around that the Leafs offered Gardiner, Kadri and the #8 and that wasn't enough? I love Ekblad but that deal sucks and adding to it makes it even worse....that being said I'd still stay in contact to see what it would take and it wasn't outrageous look at a deal.

That would be a little rich to give up that much...I'd like to keep Gardner unless Florida gives something descent back. He's got wheels.

It was actually Colaiacovo, Antropov and a 1st.

I think that was more of an absurd suggestion by whoever wrote that particular order. There's no way any GM in their right mind would offer that for the 1st overall pick in this draft. Not without Florida sending another significant piece to the Leafs.

So, just a little over a week until draft day.

Will they, or won't they? Will the Leafs trade up to pick first overall?

The 1st overall pick almost certainly is not being traded. We hear it's "in play" just about every year, but, no team has traded out of that spot since 2003.

From Brian Lawton...
Rumours flying around the trade of the #1 overall pick. I am handicapping it 80% chance the pick @FlaPanthers is moved. #winnowmode is on

Btw Busta...2003 really wasn't all that long ago.
