Draft Pick Watch - WE PICKED NYLANDER!!1!!

Nik the Trik said:
I think people may want to take their cues just a bit from last night's NBA draft. In the week leading up to the draft we heard about how the #1 pick was going to be traded and the #3 pick would be traded and the Celtics would trade the #6 pick for Kevin Love and the Lakers would trade the #7 pick for cap space and on and on and on.

Then the draft comes and what happens? Philadelphia swapped the #10 pick with Orlando at #12, Denver traded #11 for #16 and #19 and Miami traded up from #26 to 24. That's it. No big names, nobody traded out of the top ten.

Talk happens before the draft. Probably best not to read too much into any of it until something gets announced.

If you were a blanket, you'd be sopping wet.  SOPPING.

John Shannon? Come on guys...

What? You think Sportsnet will call just anyone a NHL insider? They limit that to, like, at most 200 of the guys they have on staff.

Here's a prediction - the Leafs won't do anything of significance.

Well, 90% of the time you'd be right, which isn't a bad thing if there aren't any moves available that improve the team.

I don't think they do, either. In fact, outside of the draft itself, I don't think much of significance happens tonight, either. Maybe one trade or two trades that aren't just draft picks for draft picks, but, I don't think any of the big names being rumoured to be on the market go anywhere tonight.

I thought at the end of last year and with leilweke talking culture change that the team would have an entirely new face this year. I'm thinking more and more that our GM is afraid to make any deals of significance for fear of being shot in the media. Probably just my frustration of believing we would have a young player to get excited about. But instead I'm sure we'll pick up another career AHLer. Go Marlies Go!

I don't think it has anything to do with Nonis being afraid of the fans or media - I think it has alot to do with a lack of tradeable assets.

From Lebrun...

Panthers GM Dale Tallon says he's got a couple decent offers but unless they improve between now and 7 pm ET, he's keeping the top pick

Except Kesler

He said 'tonight'.

That, and being that Kesler was reportedly only willing to waive his NTC for two teams - Anaheim and Chicago - he was really only barely on the market.

When you made the prediction, you were only talking about deals after 7:00 and weren't including Kesler as a big name being rumoured to be on the market, if you say so.

More madness:

Mike Kelly @MikeKellyNHL  ?  24m
Hearing Panthers seriously considering an offer from the Maple Leafs for the #1 overall pick. JVR centerpiece with others going to FLA

I hadn't heard of Mike Kelly, apparently he's a host on the NHL network.

Ick.

My inclination is to laugh and say no team would be that stupid.  But we just re-upped Carlyle, so........  :P

Trading JvR and his wonderful contract does not make any sense unless you get rid of Phaneuf, Kessel and go for an complete rebuild.

I actually wasn't considering Kesler, because, quite frankly, I had forgot he was even out there. On top of that, to me, a player who is only willing to be traded to one of two teams isn't really on the market. It's like when Lindros only wanted to be traded to the Leafs - he wasn't really on the market until after the Leafs and Flyers couldn't work something out.

I call BS.
