Game 45: Ottawa Senators vs Toronto Maple Leafs 7:00 SNET-O

That was a good game - closest thing to a playoff atmosphere we've had in a loong time. Leafs play like that every game they'll have no problem making the playoffs. Cheers

sucker punch has been a great contributor to this board for years, he definitely has the right to be here.

Please end that discussion now, and keep this thread about the game tonight, thanks.

Leafs getting bad reffing on the boards tonight too.

One more quick post...Reimer's agent:

At some point the NHL will have to enforce goalie interference consistently. If you're not going to call it, remove it from the rulebook

Ray Petkau needs to advise his client to start winning games.  Period.

Not much to say about the game that hasn't been said. Some really nonsensical officiating and defensive/goalie brain farts that let this one get away.

+  Gardiner made some pretty slick moves and his speed is definitely a good thing on the backend.
Franson continues to look really good.
    Lupul was a beast.

- Connolly was atrocious. Been looking pretty awful for a long stretch now.
Is Clarke McArthur still on the team?
Break-out is brutal. Cant tell if its a defence problem or forwards taking off too early problem.

I'd like to see Kadri with Grabovski on the 2nd line. He hasn't had alot to work with and is a waste on the bench. Crabb shouldn't be seeing any duties on anything other than the 4th line with Brown and Steckel.

I think the thing I hate most is that there is no transparency in how the NHL deals with their officials. I could get over it a lot easier if I knew that somewhere those guys were getting reamed out for missing an obvious call like that. I mean, a large man who looks like Dumbo the Elephant standing on another large man wearing pillows on his legs is kind of hard to miss...

I get so sick of the "it happened so fast" defence. The refs know hockey is a fast game. If they can't handle it, they shouldn't be officiating at this level.

Despite all that, Reimcroft still needs to make that save.

Their breakout was looking ok early in the game. When they gave up the 3rd goal everyone was on a one man mission.

I've never liked MacArthur and I thought not trading him last year at the deadline was a mistake. I'm not surprised he's having the year he is.

Reimer's probably a little rusty. Honestly, I'd run with him for at least another two or three games and see what happens.

He was the one that brought balance to the crease last year, not Gustavsson. He played at a level higher than any Leaf goalie in years and I'd like him to get in that groove again. I don't mind Gustavsson, I just find his performances wildly inconsistent and have found that to pretty much be the case during his entire tenure as a Leaf. If he becomes the clear-cut starter going forward, the Leafs aren't likely going anywhere.

It was a fantastic game. I'm just obviously really bummed by a lot of things about and I think the Leafs deserved better. Cheers for trying to make the board feel better though. - Sincerely.

Edit: Congrats on the win, BTW.

I can count on 50 hands how many times our forwards lost battles for the puck.

This team has 10 3rd line forwards and 2 1st liners.  NOT GOOD

"Both teams are a lot better teams than we've been the last couple years and the games mean a lot more," said Spezza. "When there's a lot at stake, the games become more intense. I think it's great for the game and great for our rivalry. They're fun games to play when you're competing like that."

I think after that game Burke more than ever is going to be after some size up front. The Sens are officially a tough, physical team to play against which makes two in the division.

The most frustrating part for me was watching the Sens take way more physical liberties later in the game, recognizing that the refs had put their whistles away. The Leafs should have done the same and I think they would have been able to build more momentum at home, getting the crowd into it if nothing else.

Leafs absolutely need a physical centre.... maybe not a Getzlaf, but one they can throw in between Kessel and Lupul for a few shifts to push back on some of the liberties being taken against them.

I agree, Corn. What we need is a Dion Phaneuf among the forward ranks. A top six player who doesn't need to be huge (though some size would be nice) but plays in a bad mood. - Gary Roberts 2.0

I actually think it's the opposite, unfortunately.  Losses like that, to a division rival when the play favoured the loser are tough to take.  I'd be surprised if they get back in the top 8 the rest of the way.

The Leafs did a lot of good things in that game, but got shaky goaltending and some questionable reffing. it's a frustrating loss.

You are bang on.

The roles have officially become reversed from years past.  They are the hammer, we are the nail.

We rely too much on speed and "skill."  They can play a physical game... in fact, I think they are one of the few teams who match up pretty well with Boston in that regard (Smith, Konopka, Neil, Greening, Carkner, Cowan, etc can absolutely hold their own).

I think it is paramount we get bigger, stronger and more physical.

In the offseason I propose we sign Paul Gaustad (3rd line) and Shawn Thronton (4th line)... in addition, like you said, we should look at acquiring a top 6 forward like Getzlaf, or Clowe, etc.

We need more truculence.

I tried to set the example for Sucker by steering clear of this place during the game.
But I love his moxy!
Leafs looked good tonight - that team isn't dead yet.

Bah.  The most galling thing is that you guys were supposed to be rebuilding and we were going to take the next step forward.  Instead we are stalling out just like every other year since the lockout.

That is just it, once again I get to watch another Cinderella story, when do we get our glass slipper?

I agree. :-[
