Game 5: Maple Leafs @ Rangers - Saturday January 26th, 2013 - CBC 19:00

They tried really hard in the last minute there. Should help on the shot clock.

Rangers - 42
Leafs - 17

Says it all really.  The Leafs didn't show up and they were lucky to have 2 of the first 3 on Lundqvist.

They were much better than mediocre for the first half of the game.  Then I jinxed them by saying they were my picks so far.

I thought Phaneuf was particularly good in first period.

If it alleviates your guilt some, I think they were pretty mediocre before that too.

None of the goals directly their fault.  But whatever, the end result is obviously not good enough.

Both of the last two goals came seconds after Phaneuf and Kostka lost battles down low. They didn't shoot the pucks into the net themselves, no, but they're playing mediocre defense. That they're playing 25+ minutes of mediocre defense doesn't make it any better.

They were good early on Carlyle played them way too much. 31 minutes for Phaneuf? What's he thinking, mistakes happen when you're dogged tired.

The story of the game is this: the D and Reimer kept them in it for 2 periods.  Outshot 14-3 and the first and leading 2-0?  How improbable is that?  Then the Rags' superior talent and big bodies wore them out.

No bad goals by Reimer is a positive.  Kessel being AWOL the last 4 games is a big negative.

Reimer was by far the team's best player. Can't fault him.

Kessel looks like a lost puppy without Lupul.

Do the Rangers have anyone outside of Nash-Richards-Gaborik up front? They are always out there it seems.

I don't know, I noticed Brian Boyle every now and then when he was knocking a Leaf on his butt.

I thought he was very steady. Nothing soft or easily stoppable got by him. He tracked the play well and looked far more comfortable in net compared with his previous start. Only one game but I'm a little encouraged by his performance.

The Rangers are a big team that isn't swift. The way the Leafs have beaten them in recent years is using their speed. I don't think that was in Carlyle's game plan tonight. They may have overreacted from the loss to the Isles and tried to play too defensively. As we saw, the smurfs/waterbugs on this team are not going to match up well against the big Rangers. Puck movement and skating - winning the races to the puck are key to minimize losing the physical puck battles with these big Rangers. So in my opinion, some of the fault for this loss lies with Carlyle's game plan and how he had them playing against this team.

Would you give up Kessel, and if so, what would you expect to get for him?

I was thinking something like Tyler Seguin, Dougie Hamilton and Jared Knight

Not to bang the drum or anything but...how hard would someone be laughed at for proposing that now, excluding any of the history behind it?

Was out for the whole first and quit watching when the Rangers tied it at 2. Lacklustre is the only way to describe it. Looked horrible halfway through the Isles game and continued tonight. Forwards giving up the puck way too easy. These guys scared to take a hit or what. Absolutely brutal. 9 shots after 2 periods. Finally what's the coaching staff thinking. Phaneuf and Kostka logging way too many minutes. Both -4. Do we not have anybody else to bring up for Fraser. Gardiner I can see maybe needing a little time after the concussion but wheres Blacker, Holzer.
