Gotta figure out how to win at home. 3-1 on road...0-2 at hme. Maybe they should stay at a hotel in TO this week

And the Leafs fans in away rinks are always louder than the ACC.

And that is why we stink at home... because we have the quietest rink in the NHL. our fans we had in buf were 1000 times louder than the 18,000 at home.

I really don't think there is a corration between loudness and performance. I've been to a bunch of Leafs games at the ACC and I noticed cheering even during the pre-season, but I do find it understandable that its hard to cheer when they blow a lead time and time again.

Take in a game with another team and listen to the noise compaired to tor. we just dont get into the game, and I am sure it plays on our team.

I agree. If you look at the Leafs home/road splits over the years there's really nothing to suggest that the Leafs do worse at home than you might expect. Especially not when compared to a team like Edmonton, who are frequently said to have the loudest arena in the league.

As someone who goes to games every now and then, the sentiment (and I think it's a fair one) is that Toronto is a city of "watchers."  i.e: when stuff is happening on the ice, they're paying attention.  If something happens, they'll respond accordingly with cheers or boos, and when those happen, there as loud as any arena.  But the rest of the time, they're quietly commenting to themselves or their friends (I fall into this category), or simply eyes attentively on the ice the whole time (as my girlfriend does).

I am somewhat jealous of arenas like the Jets' though, where it seems like they volume never subsides the whole game.

Dear goodness, am I not. Sporting events aren't meant to be rock concerts where volume is a constant regardless of what is actually happening.

They seem nervous when they play at home to me, scared to make a mistake.  Then when they do it falls apart.

When the jets were down 2-0 to the penguins, the arena was silent.

The bell centre is another arena known for being loud all the time but it was silent on opening day when the leafs were winning 2-0 and only livened up after the habs narrowed the to 1.

That's another thing - loud fans aren't necessarily good fans. I'm sure no one here would like the ACC to be filled with Leafs fans that act the same way as Habs fans. The last thing I want is for the crowd to cheer every team a Leaf is knocked down and then boo even louder when the undeserved penalty isn't called.

Just personally I prefer watching/attending a game with a good atmosphere.  I've been to one Leafs game in the last dozen years, and it was so quiet it actually was noticeably a worse experience for me than the Habs game I went to at the Bell Centre.  Now, no I wouldn't want them being stupid loud fans, but some kind of atmosphere I think would have been nice.

In the end though I'm really just describing what I wish personally, not in any terms of impacting the game (although maybe for a team like Winnipeg it does).

Exactly. I may be flubbing on this but I'm fairly sure that the ACC has been said to have the best atmosphere in the league by players in the polling that SI does of them every so often. I just think that most Toronto fans are sophisticated enough not to equate atmosphere with noise.

I may be misremembering, but, I believe similar polls have ranked fans at Leafs games among the most knowledgeable in the league.

Google isn't turning up anything on a quick search.

But I'm guessing players ranked their favourite road arenas perhaps?  I would guess the ACC often would come up due to the national/greater coverage the Leafs get, I'm sure players notice that coming in here - increased media focus - which probably contributes.

Yeah, something along those lines. Anyways, I've always found that the atmosphere at the ACC has a lot of tension to it which I think translates just as well as noise.

Colour me absolutely stunned that you would favour mindless noise over intelligent conversation.

I dont go to a game to have a chat, I go to a game to watch and cheer, and the louder the better. its just what sports is all about. maybe you should go to a coffee shop to watch the game, so you can chat and have some quiet time. me, I'll take the crazy fans and all the noise thay can make any day.

Cheering everything makes cheering a meaningless act. Things should be cheered when they're good, which is where the word actually comes from.

You don't need to go to a game to make a ton of noise. Scream yourself hoarse in your bathroom if you like. If you're going to leave the house, you might not want to look and sound like a crazy person.
