General Leafs Talk v2.0

Jeff Blair, on his daily morning show, has had Claude Loiselle and Dave Poulin on over the past few days.  Both, and Poulin especially, are really great to listen to.  I mean, they're executives working for a powerful sports conglomerate, so one assumes they're going to be good.  But, still, hearing them speak inspires confidence - though not deference - in the operations of the team.

Burke really did surround himself with some good people.  Give the guy credit, he seems to know how to build a dgood organizational structure.

Nazem Kadri            76 23 35 58 +7  32
Joffrey Lupul            64 23 25 48 +2  44
James van Riemsdyk 71 23 22 45  -2  38
Tyler Bozak              78 17 24 41  -8  14
David Clarkson        81 24 17 41  -9 129
Dion Phaneuf          79 13 27 40  -6 101
Nikolai Kulemin        78 14 21 35  -1  26
Dave Bolland            70 15 18 33  -2  43
Cody Franson          72  7 26 33 +3  22
Jake Gardiner          75  7 24 31    0  16

Jonathan Bernier  50 24 2.39 0.917 2
James Reimer        35 18 2.59 0.915 3

That?s playoffs bound team. 42W split between two goalies is something I would be very happy with.

I love how they predict games played!

Is it just me, or would anyone else be extremely disappointed with any of those numbers from Kadri/Lupul/JVR.  Kadri and JVR based solely on the hope that they are going to improve from their prior year, and based on that alone they have short changed both of them considerably.  They are being shown as regressing from a ppg perspective from last years abbreviated season. I don't know why that would occur.

Lupul based on the hope that Phaneuf doesn't hit him on the wrist again!

Yeah, JVR was on a 30 goal pace last season.  If he shoots at the same pace this season I expect he can hit the 30 goal level.

my THN forecaster predicts 35 goals and 65 points from JVR...I'd be ecstatic if those were his totals.  I don't remember the gp prediction but it has to be high for those totals.

Yeah, you seem a bit removed from things.  Is there a reason why?  Game 7 blues?

I'll always be haunted by that game but I think the reason is just life is so damn busy. I've also caught a bit of the fantasy sports bug and that, coupled with some interesting people I've come to know on twitter has occupied a lot of my free screen-time. I do make an effort to keep up here so I've become more of a lurker than a poster of late but I do check in. - Too many great people here to completely ignore.  8)

Yes - Ignoring the obvious doubts on their games played prediction, to have both JVR and Kadri at 23 goals, considering both had 18 goals in the shortened season, is a bit unreasonable.

It's actually laughable. 30plus more games and only 5 more goals each? And these guys are the professional forecasters?

I would expect JvR to tally roughly somewhere around what Kulemin scored in that career year of his: 30 goals, 25-30 assists.

That's being conservative and assuming that JvR has a mid-season slump, something he's pretty well known for.

Those numbers are by no means a cap, though. He could do better than that.

I don't think they're all that conservative. I doubt he'll ever turn into a consistent 70+ point getter.

While I agree with that, I thought he was one of the best Leafs last season. I expected less of him and even thought he'd be injured a bit more, but he more than exceeded my expectations. I think he may just have consistent 60-70 point player potential if he stays healthy and continues to get better, going into his prime. He was a beast in front of the net with incredibly soft hands there. Skies the limit for this player right now.

For those interested, Corsi/Fenwick numbers for the Leafs closely relate to time on attack numbers: http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2013/9/16/4727746/leafs-attack-time-at-the-halfway-mark

The Leafs' success last year was akin to dropping into the fetal position in a fight, and then when the bully walks away, kicking him in the balls with his back turned.

Wow, that's spot-on.

Small sample size but it looks like MacIntyre could be a capable NHL back up. Does that give Nonis the freedom to trade a goalie sometime during the season ?

I personally want to see Bernier or Reimer show they have the ability to play 60+ games before disposing one of them so they can be replaced by MacIntyre.

Well that cap crunch is already going to bite the team with Clarkson to be suspended.  Will have to go with a short roster most likely.

Provided Franson doesn't sign it won't be that big of a deal. I just wonder if this effects negotiations with him at all. Like if he caves now and accepts that $2.4mil deal the Leafs were offering do they pull it off the table until November?
