Goaltending conundrum v3.0-Reimer or Bernier?

Well, even if he's off the ice for the full week, it'll only take a couple days after that for him to be ready. My guess is his ETA is somewhere in the 10-14 days range.

This was the premise of my question/concern -- is a couple days enough to get ready after an injury like this?  Seeing how many guys are coming back from an injury only to suffer a setback, I hope this is proceeded with caution.

Well, that would depend on the severity. From the sounds of things, Reimer's knee strain isn't too serious, so, as long as he's pain-free within a week, he should be good to go.

Well it seems like the only conundrum the leafs have with goaltending is, what goalie is better. I think they are both comming into there own. not a bad problem if you ask me.

Reimer 2.31 and 0.929%
Scrivens 2.23 and 0.927%

1 shut out each. Both have played well but had at least one bad game each, which is fair. Have to give the team credit for their defensive play too.

Both goalies have different styles too. Reimer is much more solid and big and plays the angles while Scrivens is a bit more ungainly and scrambley but both are getting the job done and giving us chances to win.

Lets hope it continues and Reimer is back soon.

What has been such a pleasant surprise this season, IMHO, is the fact that both Scrivens and Reimer are playing with such confidence.

Scrivens also has had terrific lateral movement, and seems to be square to the shooter, even on difficult rebounds.

It just goes to show what a difference solid (not necessarily even spectacular) goaltending can make to a team.

If Reimer comes back within the next week, it may be a slight surprise.  He looked like he was really favouring his leg, and couldn't put any weight on it, and even if it is pain-free, it still might take a few practices at least to see if he doesn't have any restrictions in his mobility, etc.

I suffered a  moderately severe knee sprain years ago playing hockey , and it never got better, and eventually led to 2 knee operations for torn meniscus, and ligaments.
If Reimer is back, and starting this upcoming week, it will be a terrific surprise, IMHO.

It's nice to have two guys in the top 11 (10th and 11th) for SV%, while both have played a reasonable number of games.

Goalies ahead of them include: Luongo, Anderson, Ellis, Rinne, Crawford, Hedberg, Lehtonen, Fasth, Niemi, and Emery.  Both are in the top 20 for GAA too.

So on the whole the Leafs have been getting above average goaltending right now.  I'm not sure how long this will keep up, but if they can hold on in the next 5-6 games, there are definitely more winnable ones than uphill battles.  A strong 10-game stretch would likely be enough to make the playoffs more than likely.

What goalies 25 and under have done since the 2004-05 lockout (puts Reimer in good light): http://bit.ly/VYPxpG

I'm uncomfortable with Rask's position on that list, both in SV% and GAA.  :(

If one takes into account some allowance for the impact on a goalie's save% when he's playing behind some weak talent, those are maybe quite good results for Reimer - he might even be higher on that list.

Somewhat quietly, Scrivens numbers so far this season aren't looking so bad:
.927 save%
2.23 GAA
It's still too early to put lots of stock in those results but it's encouraging.

Basically, he had the one stinker of a game against the Islanders and has been .900 or better in every other game.

Nonis: Acquiring a veteran goaltender is something they are STILL interested in. It would help them grow Reimer and Scrivens

What do people think about Khabibulin?  Looked pretty good in relief of Dubnyk on Saturday (maybe they'd want to keep him for that reason).  Last year on his contract, maybe Edmonton would be interested in some of our spare D parts?  Just throwing it out there...the asking price would probably be too high.

I've been saying this all along. They could really use the experience of a veteran tender to help nurture Reimer and Scrivens at a more gradual pace. I think it would really benefit their development.

OK, so it has been a week. When do we see Reimer again? Probably no need to rush him the way Scrivens is playing right now.

I think they mentioned tonight that he might get on the ice for some skating soon?  I'd think he's at least a week away still, and yeah with the way Scrivens is playing there's no need to rush it.

The only way I'm on board with this is if the Reimer injury drags on or he doesn't play well his first few games back. Otherwise I'd rather see the Reimer/Scrivens tandem the rest of the season.
The more these guys play the better it is for their development IMO.
