Goaltending conundrum v3.0-Reimer or Bernier?

If Reimer had allowed 3 less goals over the time he's been in net this season, he'd have a top 5 Sv% - right now, 1 goal every 6 starts is the difference between him at the top starters in the league

That's something.  I hope he can keep it together down the stretch here.

I just think we can run with what we have in net. Tor has spent more then enough trying to get that elusive goalie.  I think we have two that will carry us as far as we need to go.

Weren't you recently advocating for the Leafs to get Ryan Miller?

No I am happy with the two we have but, I just threw out here that he would be nice to have. I would sign him as a free agent but, am not sure I would give buf what they wanted.

Reimer is on the Haynes show on TSN1050 at 2:15pm.  Probably won't say anything of note but might be interesting to hear where his head is at and how he's approaching the games down the stretch.

Numbers aside, the thing I've noticed in the games I've watched, is that neither of them are giving up those back breaking, crippling type goals, those complete wiffs that we saw from Gustavsson and Toskala.

Watching the 2 of them I'm reminded of Rhodes and Potvin, I know I've said it before. It's just nice to see a backup play a game and not be a complete void back there, as I've gotten used to the last 15 years.

And I know it's a small sample size, but I'm obviously way off on my assessment of Scrivens. other than playing the puck, he seems to be just fine at the NHL level.

speaking of the Monster, I was at the Coyotes game in Phoenix on Monday and he let in one soft one in the first and then Detroit fired up and he was pretty steady for the rest of the game. Detroit won 3-2 and look like a pretty good squad.. Glad Gus has a new home with them. By the way Ian White was fantastic.

It is nice to be seeing a little praise for Scrivens on here maybe not the fanboy adnauseum praise that I would parlay  :) but very nice.  Scrivens is a good team guy and oddly almost gives off that vet presence back there.  I think having gone through a long playoff run at the AHL level with a lot of the same kids now with the big club will bode well for us and will provide a positive influence on Reimer.  It appears the two really are close and I like the tandem going forward in a year that not too much is expected of the Leafs.  I would be shocked to see us give up assets for a vet goalie and in turn upsetting the apple cart so to speak.

I think both goalies are great at filling the net, playing the odds.  But neither has impressed me with awesome, Hasek-like, athletic lateral movements.  They're great goalies if they're protected.  But left alone, they're not always going to bail you out.  Conclusion, keep both goalies and play defensive hockey, but avoid the shoot-outs.

There is no upside when you stop crazy ones you have no business making, and let in crappy ones, and Im not talking about redirects, they dont count. You have to be lucky for those.

From watching Reimer's struggles over the last two years and his recent decent play I've noticed a few things.

1) When Reimer struggles it's generally when he's not keeping his upper body as tall as possible when in the butterfly.
2) His strong play shows him continuing to play the butterfly but being taller while doing so. The one thing he hasn't adjusted yet is his closing of the legs when dropping into that butterfly. If players can catch him on the way down, the 5 hole is the place to go(as is the case with all butterfly goalies).

editted because really i shouldn't attempt to post from my tablet. How do people type on those things.

Lets not get to up in arms though.  In his previous two starts to this one he did steal 3 of 4 points from the Bruins and he was the winner last night.  He seems to get the wins despite less than stellar play at times as the team seems to  rally around him.  Having said that I would like to see Scrivens  Sat night after a great game against the Panthers.  With two fairly unproven goalies heading into the playoffs I think it is important to keep both sharp, plus it is no secret, I like Scrivens  8).

As Cox says, we really have Gillis over a barrel if we want to get Luongo.  The idea of giving up Bozak to get him is ridiculous, though.  I've said from the beginning, the only way I'd trade for Luongo is if we get him for essentially nothing.  If we could do that, I'd think seriously about it, especially if we can stick VAN with part of his salary.

Getting Kipper could be OK too, I guess.

I am just trying to figure out what part of a 34yr old goaltender with a .904 save percentage and 10yrs remaining on a contract would be appealing.

Fixed that one for ya  ;)

I don't understand it either. I'm not convinced Luongo is enough of an upgrade, now and in the future, to justify taking on that contract. As for Kipper . . . well, he looks like he very well could be on the verge of being done - not to mention the fact he's made it clear he won't report to his new team if he's traded.

That's due to one game where he gave up 8 goals on 28 shots. Without that game he's .918 in the other 14 games. He's got a ton more experience than Reimer and Scrivens combined so that in of itself is an upgrade.  He's proven in the past he can play a ton of hockey (60+ starts a year) and put up solid numbers. He's an upgrade in every way in net except for age.

Experience isn't an upgrade in and of itself if the younger players are playing better.
