Goaltending conundrum v3.0-Reimer or Bernier?

Drew MacIntyre?

You mean, the guy who has all of 104 minutes of NHL ice time, has started 0 NHL games and is only signed to an AHL deal? Not exactly the ideal 3rd goalie.

Lots of twitter chatter re. Kiprusoff.

Let's be honest, it's probably no more than that. The Leafs looking at goalies is a storyline the media needs to play up right now - since it'll give them something more to talk about when it doesn't happen on Wednesday.

@Aaron Ward
Calgary Flames have granted Toronto Maple Leafs permission to talk to Kiprusoffs representatives

Unless he is coming with Komisarek going the other way or with Bouwmeester, they should pass.

I really would not be in favour of going for a Kiprusoff.

However I would be happy to bring in some back up in case of injury. Looking at the pending UFA list for 2013 what about any of these who have a minimal cap hit and could probably be got for a lot less than you'd want for Kiprusoff or Luongo

Mathieu Garon (TBL, not making playoffs) $1.3m
Brian Boucher (PHI, out of playoffs right now) $0.95m
Mike Smith (PHX, out of playoffs right now) $2m
Jason Labarbera (PHX, see above) $1.25m
Even Jose Theodore (FLA, out of playoffs) $1.5m

And could all do the job of a backup rental

Done purely by contract and team position without looking at players individual stats

One thing I don't buy into is the notion that we would be in trouble going with golaies with no NHL playoff experience? So how much playoff experience did Felix Potvin have when he started in the 92/93 playoffs? Everyone starts somehwere..

Yeah that's my thinking too.  Every goalie in the history of hockey has been a rookie in the playoffs at some point in his career.  You have to start somewhere.  Leafs aren't a Cup contender, let's just see how the two guys we have can perform.

I don't think the concern is so much about running with Riemer into the playoffs. The concern lies more with the fact that Reimer and Scrivens have pretty much been working as a tandem most of the season, and Riemer, at least so far in his early career, has frequently been injured. Would Scrivens be an adequate playoff goalie to bet the bank on should Reimer go down or falter? That is closer to the question I think the Leafs staff are asking themselves.

Agreed. And the 92/93 Leafs did have a backup with playoff experience.

Theodore would have been my choice, but he's been out with an injury for a month.

It's more about providing them with a safety net rather than taking way their opportunity to gain experience.

mirtle: Leafs sign Drew MacIntyre to an NHL contract. Was starting with the Marlies. Is that their third goalie?

I hope so. Not because it's Drew MacIntyre but because I don't want Kipper or Luongo.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Also, TOR signs G Drew MacIntyre off an AHL deal to an NHL deal for balance of season. He, too, is therefore on waivers today.

EDIT: If he clears waivers (which seems likely), being on an NHL contract would allow the Leafs to include him in potential trades - which might be an additional reason they got him under contract today.
