Goaltending conundrum v3.0-Reimer or Bernier?

Zee said:
I agree cw, i've said it before, every single goalie (or player for that matter) is a rookie in the playoffs at some point in their career.  How else will you find out if they can excel in the playoffs if you don't play them?

But who's to say that a veteran would be brought in to replace Reimer? Are we not assuming that a veteran would be brought in to support Reimer in case he flops?

I'm not sold on Kiprusoff being that guy(with his price tag), but if Calgary is willing to eat some of that cap hit, is it really that big of a deal if he's the 2nd string guy who's ready to help the young starter both on and off the ice?

I'm of the opinion that Nonis should give his two guys a vote of confidence and go into the playoffs with them.  If it's a total disaster you address a veteran goalie in the summer.  If they play well enough in the playoffs you're not worried.

I'm on the fence.

And on the Kipper front, apparently he's gone back to saying he won't report to a new team...so hopefully this is dead.

It's been over 20 years since I read The Game by Ken Dryden, but in his book he talks about his start in the NHL. He was a rookie who started at the beginning of the playoffs and his experience was that it was easier for him to start in the post season.

He said that the team was more responsible defensively, more cautious, cleared rebounds better and kept more shots to the outside.

Granted, that was a stacked team...but playoffs rounds usually start conservatively. Not a bad thing for a young goalie.

Sweet, so as long as Reimer plays like Dryden, we're good! ;)

Some goalies are big game goalies. Some aren't. Hope fully we'll get to find that out this year.(Remember, the knock on Luongo has been that he's not a big game goalie...not sure if I agree with that, but that's always been the Nuck fans complaint).

I could never get up for the weak teams and it showed..Put me in a championship or a playoff game and it was a different story.

It appears that it will be Reimer and Scrivens going forward and Zee and co. may be right. Why waste picks/prospects on a goalie if we don't have to.

I think we have good cross section of games here where it seems pretty obvious Reimer is having difficulty tracking the puck. Anybody have any theories?

I'm not sure I follow.

Sure he should of had that 3rd goal lastnight, but he made a boatload of saves lastnight that were great. Some through a tonne of traffic.

This has been going on all season and not with shots involving traffic. Routine shots with no traffic are being bobbled.

He's getting the job done to be sure, but it looks like he's been losing track of some fairly common shots to me.

I'll watch for it. I do know that grabbing routine 'fly balls' has been a bit of an issue.

From my time coaching goalies, the biggest issue which caused the loss of pucks coming into the goalie's body was not following the puck into your glove/chest/blocker. Keep an eye to see if Reimer is physically turning his head to follow the puck into his glove. If not, that could be an issue.

James Reimer 25GS 15-5-5 2.46 .922 2SO
Carey Price 33GS 19-9-4 2.36 .912 3SO

Lets be thankful we didn't see a Luongo deal materialize.

Another take on the Leafs goaltending.

James Reimer 7th best save % for NHL starting goalies.
Ben Scrivens 8th best save % for NHL back ups.

And yet, I still prey we don't have to use Scrivens in the playoffs for any reason.

I am sure most clubs pray that they don't have to use their backup in the playoffs. Just be happy that your backup has performed to a respectable level, well better than 22 other team's backups.

Since the trade deadline:

James Reimer 3-1-1  2.18 GAA .930 SV%
Miikka Kiprusoff 0-3-0 3.41 GAA .890 SV%
Roberto Luongo 1-0-0 1.00 GAA .976 SV%

Though I was a big fan of Gustavsson, I'm probably more comfortable that we have Scrivens as a back-up. He seems like a great teammate.

I bet several teams will want luongo once he gets bought out this summer.

There is no Goaltending conundrum Reimer is taking us to the playoffs.
