Goaltending conundrum v3.0-Reimer or Bernier?

I agree. this should be shut down. like I said long ago we don't need a goalie.

I don't know nutman, might be hard to beat Boston with no goalie in the Leafs' net.  8)

Ha ha ha.... Don't think I would try that. well maybe after a Komorov shift, because they can't score lying on the ice in never never land. ;D

Since the trade deadline:

James Reimer 3-1-1  2.18 GAA .930 SV%
Miikka Kiprusoff 0-3-0 3.41 GAA .890 SV%
Roberto Luongo 1-0-0 1.00 GAA .976 SV%

I bet several teams will want luongo once he gets bought out this summer.

There is no Goaltending conundrum Reimer is taking us to the playoffs.

Agreed. My only concern is his history of injuries. We're toast if he sustains another long term injury prior to, or during the playoffs. I suppose that is true with many teams, but I don't have a lot of confidence in Scrivens as the number one goaltender for any sort of playoff run.

Yes. I think it's safe to say that's the reason the leafs were talking to kipper...not to replace Reimer, but as his backup in case of injury.

The media was big on asking how he felt about it all. He was probably thinking, "ask Scrivens"

Lets be thankful we didn't see a Luongo deal materialize.

James Reimer 26GS 16-5-5 2.36 .925 3SO
Carey Price 34GS 19-10-4 2.50 .908 3SO

Top Save%s among NHL Starters

4 Henrik Lundqvist    0.928
5 Corey Crawford      0.926
6 James Reimer        0.925
6 Antti Niemi              0.925
6 Cory Schneider      0.925

James has himself in pretty good company with that stat

I know Anderson's numbers are great, but it's only 18 games so I think he's got to be out of the running.  Bobrovsky has been quite the story in Columbus this season, but yeah Reimer sure has put himself in the conversation.

I'd be willing to bet the Vezina goes to Lundqvist.

Sometimes the award goes to the "usual suspects" rather than who's having the best season.  Anderson hasn't played enough games IMO, but I would think Bobrovsky or Rask are candidates.

It feels like Lundqvist has had an off year yet his stats are still stellar.

I was surprised looking at his stats too.

An interesting year for the Vezina - there really isn't much distance between goaltenders with the exception of perhaps Anderson, but his injury/lack of games played really makes it hard to justify that he's in the tops...

Babrovsky and Lundqvist would be on my shortlist, and you might convince me that Rask should be considered as well (although I think his team has more of an effect on his play than the others). Amazing to me, though, how close Reimer is to those numbers...

17-10-6, 2.03GAA, .931SV% - Babrovsky
17-8-4, 1.99GAA, .929SV% - Rask
19-14-3, 2.08GAA, .928SV% - Lundqvist

17-5-5, 2.36GAA, .925SV% - Reimer

There's an argument to be made that he's held them in there. Rangers defense/GAA is 4th while their offence/GFA is 4th worst.

Last year, their GAA was very similar (3rd) but they scored nearly .4 goals per game more (11th). That gave them the second best record in the NHL.

Also there's the "compelling narrative" factor... I think if Columbus makes the playoffs, Bobrovsky is the best bet for Vezina.  If Columbus makes it and NYR fall out, then Bobrovsky for SURE wins.

Bobrovsky also has "infuriate Flyers fans" going for him, and that should count for something, right?

The Hockey News starts drinking the Optimus kool-aid.

http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/51291-James-Reimer-starting-new-era-of-Toronto-goalies.html

Although they have yet to officially punch their ticket to the post-season, it?s only a matter of time and it?s because one of the many things that has turned around for the Maple Leafs is goaltending. He may not look like an oil painting in the Leafs net, he handles the puck like it?s a hand grenade sometimes and his rebound control is iffy?but all Reimer has done this season is put the Leafs in a position to win. And in games such as Monday night, when Toronto beat the New Jersey Devils 2-0 despite being outshot 32-13, he occasionally delivers those kinds of goaltending performances that every playoff-bound team needs ? the ones where the team has no business winning the game, but does because their goaltender saves them.

Even the aforementioned Hall of Famer at the other end of the ice, Martin Brodeur, was impressed with Reimer?s performance.

?If he plays like that every game, I don?t know why they?re looking to get another goalie in here,? Brodeur said. ?He was unbelievable. He stays in his net and plays within himself. He looked really good, really confident.?

Columbus has been playing .725 hockey over the last 20 games. Bobrovsky has a bunch to do with that. Could be one heck of a first round match up with Chicago if they sneak in and keep playing like they have been.

I like to say  hats off to Reimer, the first goalie to get us into the playoffs in 9 years . It's been almost 20 years since our last homegrown net minder had a great playoff run and wishing Reimer the same success that Felix Potvin had in 93 .
