Goaltending conundrum

Its well beyond the injury at this point, but the injury I think got the ball rolling downhill to the point now where he has about as much confidence as Droopy.

Absolutely.  I wanted to say that people used Miller's struggles after his injury to somewhat justify Reimer's play, but Miller has turned it around.  Not to say that Miller and Reimer are on the same wavelength, but the injury/reason can't be used completely.

Last night, after the Kopecky goal, Reimer pointed in the direction of him or the defenceman (was it Phaneuf?).  I don't know if that was his way of signalling interference or pointing out his d-man, but he has NEVER done that before.  Completely uncharacteristic of him.  Also the stoned pose, closing of the eyes, and exhaling of frustration was never part of his demeanour last year either.

I thought the frustration on Phadoof was justified but Gus proved last year that emotional displays like that don't do anybody any good.

Would it be worth bringing up Scrivens or one of the other farm goalies for the odd spot start in back to backs to see how they go?

Why?  Gus has played well enough to win since Carlyle took over.

Reimer truly looks done.  It'll be interesting to see how they deal with him in the offseason.

I'm a little torn on Reimer right now. The way I see it we kind of have a few decent options. One being to play him a lot and tank. Maybe he get us to the 3rd last pick. But then we lose the ability to trade him high I would think. He apparently garnered an offer of a 1st at the deadline. Another is to not play him at all or shelter him with "easier" games and hope his value stays roughly the same and trade him for the 1st come draft time. Third other good option is gamble he turns a corner next year like other teams might have been trying when they offered the 1st.

I'm inclined to keep him in my mind. But I know that's not the popular belief atm.

Yeah Miller vs. Reimer could very well be the case of a veteran being able to shake off the issues and get his confidence back quicker vs. a young 2nd year guy with very little body of work to look back on and say, "yeah I have done this before I can do this now" type of thing.

On that goal he may have been pointing to Phaneuf but I thought he was just pointing to Kopecky as to say it went off his arse, or whatever.  But still, clearly the nerves are shot when gestures like that are happening.  He looks completely defeated.  Pulling yourself out of a hole like that is almost impossible.  I think the only thing that saves him is a summer off to recoup.

Yeah. Right now, I'd say it's a combination of the injury, a lack of confidence and a sophomore slump. It's almost been a perfect storm of bad for him, because, on top of all the stuff on his end, the team hasn't played particularly well defensively in front of him either, making it that much more difficult for him to turn things around.

Reimer is too young to give up on.  Not sure what his waiver status is for next year but starting him in the AHL might give him some time to rebuild.  Only issue is if he is has to pass through waivers, and manages to rebuild his confidence, someone may pick him up on re-entry waivers.

If Burke's talk of a significant offer for Reimer were true then I would be shocked if he cleared waivers.

My fear with him, like many young goalies who go through this, is he ends up a bit too scarred from it all to ever bounce back.  We have seen that movie a million times before in the NHL and we've had more than our fair share of goalies crushed under the pressure here in Toronto.

I doubt Burke gives up on him though but he damned well better get one helluva veteran to play along side him next year and take the heat off, or its a suicide mission for Reimer.

Funny, right now Jonas and James are night and day, Jonas seems to be playing better under the weight of the world than he was before.

To see how a Rynnas or Oduya might go in the NHL, no harm if they lose, but they get a taste. To see if Scrivens has changed since his last spell up.

Gus may be able to play every game, but he may need a back to back night off.

Of course, if we can't call one up, then fair enough.

Take Reimer out back with a shovel and call Owuya up from the ECHL(really who cares about that team? Although some see some benefit in him playing on a winning team down there and potentially having a playoff run) and see what he has.  If they truly wanted to do this I'm sure they'd IR one of the goalies with and "upper body ailment".

Leave Scrivens and Rynnas with the Marlies, Scrivens is the go to guy down there and there is no reason to mess with their mojo while they sit on the brink of a Calder run.

The thing with Reimer is that he is on a reasonable contract, so there is flexibility with what to do with him.  If this is what we have with Reimer and he ends up being the backup, it's not like he was paid as a #1 ($3M+) to feel bad that he is eating up valuable cap space sitting on the bench.  If he rediscovers his game and becomes a legitimate looking #1 again (meaning, a pace similar to the one he backstopped the team to in his stint last year), then we have a bargain.  Same could be said if he platoons with a veteran goalie who pushes him.

Now, the question could become, how does management view Reimer and Gustavsson.  Is Reimer still looked at as the #1?  Are both viewed on par in terms of backup options for next year?  If it's the latter, and the signicant offer resurfaces in the summer, does Burke use Reimer as a chip to improve the club elsewhere (a pick, some forward help, or dare I say it, in a deal for Nash) and just re-sign Gustavsson?

That's a fair point.

Also, apologies for calling Owuya Oduya

That's never been verified as far as I know, Burke claimed he got an offer but that's all.

Burke said that he received a "strong" offer for him, and that's obviously been twisted into being a 1st.

I would be reluctant to let Reimer play again, his confidence is already at historic low, there is really no need to let him shelled more and more. There is no doubt he needs to get his act together. Gus did it, so can James.
I would run with Gus. I like that he rediscovered his athletic part of his goalie style. Support and confidence from Carlyle definately helps.

As far as back-up I would also be inclined to try Owuya, he is too young and few steps away from the big league anyway, so eventual blow-out should not do much harm to his confidence. The excitement of the NHL game should teoretically overwhelm. Owuya like Gus is from Sweden, they may work together.

For that matter, "strong" could arguably simply mean a trade value greater than his perceived or projected trade value, whatever that may be.

Reimer in visiting net at Leafs skate this morning. Appears he'll make second straight start.

Not that it should surprise anybody, but this move tells me that Carlyle knows the season is over and wants to give Reimer a chance to find his game for next season.

Hilarious that Carlyle is going back to Reimer. If he really wants the best chance of winning he would start Gustavsson.  Maybe they're trying to decide if they can keep Reimer next season?  If he has any game left whatsoever.

My feeling is the Leafs really want to go with Reimer + FA next year and they are hoping that Reims can outplay Gus to justify this. Although lining him up against Stamkos and co... might not happen
