Goaltending conundrum

Hilarious that Carlyle is going back to Reimer. If he really wants the best chance of winning he would start Gustavsson.  Maybe they're trying to decide if they can keep Reimer next season?  If he has any game left whatsoever.

My feeling is the Leafs really want to go with Reimer + FA next year and they are hoping that Reims can outplay Gus to justify this. Although lining him up against Stamkos and co... might not happen

I like this move.  I hope Reimer does well but loses by 1 goal in regulation.  I want them to tank now.  No point in winning more games now.

So, the way they're both starting to play now we don't need any new goalies for next year? Right?

;-)

Not sure if this has been posted, but here is Reimer's new mask a la Optimus Reim theme

They seen to play better when it really dosen't matter anymore, eh ?

Ya I hate that.  I was hoping they were going to lose last night and the rest of the games from here on out.  Just watch, now that they are out of it, they will play lights out.

With James allowing a goal apiece against Tampa and Ottawa we now how both goalies under 3.00 GAA again. Glad that James left that embarrasing territory.

Vokoun and Nabokov are still set for UFA this summer.  Vokoun will probably look to sign with a contender, but Nabokov may be an option.  If neither are an option for the Leafs in July, I guess you have to think trade.

FWIW... I was at the Wild / Sabres game the other night and Josh Harding was fantastic.  Allowed 2 goals on 37 shots. Lots of the great variety.  UFA and only 27.

I would subjectively say that I have never seen a goalie perform as poorly as Gustavsson last night.  The shots that made it through were abysmal.

Rynnas looked pretty good.  He looks massive in the net.  Also, Greg Millen mentioned how well Scrivens has been playing lately.

That said, I'm in 100% agreement on trying to sign Harding for next year and beyond.

A veteran goaltender is needed. Period. One with tons of NHL experience and accolades. Giguere should have stayed on, but that ship has sailed.

Rynnas looked like he had more confidence and less nerves in his first game than Gus at any point this year.

Will be interesting to see what happens with Scrivens who I heard was waiver eligible next season and Rynnas, who both seem to be knocking at the door. Lots of potential there. Burke absolutely has to sign a veteran, but what does he do with both prospects, assuming Reimer is still here.

I'm starting to think they should move Reimer too and go wtih veteran goalie + prospect A or B.  Revisit whatever offer he got for Reimer before the deadline.

Maybe just wipe the slate clean.

Rynnas did look good, have to see more of him to really say a lot but there weren't any obvious chinks in his first outing. I'm reminded a little of Scrivens' first outing though, need a body of work from both of them to really know/say.

I hadn't considered the option of wiping the slate clean, interesting.

This. I don't care so much about accolades, just experience. Obviously, the more successful, the better, but, I'm trying to be somewhat realistic. Any goalie like this that's brought in won't be here for the long haul, but, getting someone like Biron or Chris Mason - someone who can be a calming influence, a mentor and who can hold down the fort if needed. The last thing the Leafs should do is go into the season with another tandem with less than 200 games experience between them.

I've thought about a fresh start as well.  That would be the ideal situation to start your development in the NHL, having a veteran to show you how it's done, help with your learning curve and take the heat off.  Especially in a potential snake pit like Toronto.  I have to think that Reimer is always going to feel tremendous pressure after being a super star in the second half of last season to being a shaky tender whos fans have lost confidence in him (at least judging by the boos).
