Goaltending conundrum

I wouldn't mind Burke going after Josh Harding this off season.  There is no one else on the open market that I think would help this team.  I see him at the very least a step up from Gus.

It will be interesting to see how Quick and Luongo perform this playoffs.  May decide if Bernier or Scheinder are available, but I don't think either will come cheap.

Minnesota is a pretty d first conservative team so I'm not so, wild, about him... he's a career back up with an injury history too.

Past Vokoun I'm not so sure the best free agent goalie available isn't Jonas.

Scrivens last year - .924 SV% in 33 AHL games
Scrivens this year - .925 SV% in 37 AHL games

Jussi Rynnas last year - .911 SV% in 30 AHL games
Jussi Rynnas this year - .911 SV% in 19 AHL games

Maybe it shows more the problem with just showing their SV%, but take Rynnas.  Now he's up to a .914SV% and his GAA is down around .30 points or so from last season.  Scrivens' GAA is down a similar amount.  In Scrivens' case, how much more improvement can one really expect from a .924 SV%?  One of the top goalie prospects (Jacob Markstrom) is at .927SV%.

I don't really see how Rynnas and Scrivens improving (even if marginally in their sv%) from already good-to-excellent numbers is to be used to discredit Allaire?

GAA going down with comparable SV% would be an indication of the team giving up fewer shots so I wasn't really sure how much that factors in to the SV%.  I wasn't pointing out the stats to imply that it proves Allaire isn't doing an effective job.  It's just that there really hasn't been much to hang on in terms of goaltender development since he arrived.  I'm positive he has changed things in the goaltenders games.  Our goalies drop to their knees earlier than when they first came here.  Gus flops around less than he used to (and has been marginally better playing the puck).

But at the same time you haven't seen improvement in their results.  It doesn't mean that Allaire isn't doing his job, but it also would imply that whatever changes Allaire has made haven't really been for the better, at least in the short term.

It doesn't discredit Allaire in any way.  I just wish there was something to hang a hat on and say "look at the improvement in Player X", that would come across way better than saying, "look, 30 years ago he was the goaltending coach in Montreal when Patrick Roy came around".

The goalies go down to early and they give up way to many top shelf goals.  I don't understand whey they go down before the shooter shoots?? The shooters in the NHL are so accurate these days they can pick the top corners over the goalies shoulders....I agree positioning is also an issue because if you are far in your net and down in a butterfly the corners are exposed that much more...

Anyways I agree with the early post that Gus is probably the best FA goalie available.....I have a feeling we lose him you will see him become a star on another team especially if his new coach can teach him not to drop down so early and cut the angles a bit more... He has lots of talent I really think the Leafs need to bring him back....goalies just take longer to develop...

I agree, letting him go will not be a very good move, he has it in him to be a very good goalie.

It will be a huge mistake.  Down the road fans will be saying I can't believe we let him get away....
I can't help but think about when Chicago let Hasek go... Everyone can see Gus has lots of talent you can't give up on him now...the going down early and positioning problem can be fixed with coaching....he's got great talent!

Listening to Burke presser it was obvious that he sticks with Reimer and looks for another goalie. I am not happy to see Gus go, hopefully he gets a job somewhere else.

In my eyes Burke losses all credibility when he say things like 'Reimer is the real deal' and is already planning on having him in his top 2 next year.

Am i the only one that thinks that Reimer looks like a  peewee house league goalie who is playing that position because he isn't a good enough skater?  I am not a goalie scout but I notice so many weaknessess in his game. It always looks like it takes such an effort to move side to side or up and down.  There is nothing about Reimer that screams natural goaltender.

I am certain that he is going to be the next Justin Pogge and will be buried in the minors in a couple years while will go on to Gustavsson thrive with someone like Detroit.

Sorry Burke, but Reimer is not and will never be the goalie you may think he is.

The Leafs appear to be going down the same road that has hurt them the past couple of seasons: declaring a number one starter before it's been earned. They did it with Giguere last season and again this season with Reimer.

It seems to me that the best course of action is to wait and see who plays the best - in training camp and also during the season. Last season, they should have stuck with Reimer after he was called up around the new year instead of sending him back to the Marlies first chance they had. This year, ironically, they insisted on going back to Reimer when it was clear he either wasn't ready to return or isn't what they think he is.

My opinion, for what it's worth (not much), is that they need to be open-minded and go with the goalie who gives them the best chance to win, even if it isn't the guy they thought it was going to be.

If that's what he said, Burke's more out of touch with reality than I thought.  I cannot fathom the idea of guaranteeing Reimer an NHL job.

I guess the fact that Burke has signed pretty much nothing but terrible contracts means that he'll have to pay some of them, but come on now.

I believe Reimer is young and still has number one goaltending in him. I also believe that his injury played a big part in his poor season.

Of the two goalies that played for us as regulars, I think both could still be a number one, but I'm sure that both won't be with us next season.

Vancouver has two goalies on their roster and one of them won't be at the start of next season.

Burke needs to get that goalie.

Burke said he planned to keep Riemer and get another goalie but when that decision is made final Gus would be the first one informed of final decision.  He said he has said that to Gus and that was what he felt he owed Gus.

But, seriously, what does that mean?

"Gus, we've decided to trade for a goalie to replace you. Thanks for everything."

Or

"Gus, we've decided to sign a free agent goalie to replace you. Thanks for everything."

Gus has to know his future is elsewhere with or without Burke's 'final decision'.

it was in reference to what they will decide after consultations between all the execs and coaches.  For all we know before July 1st Riemer could be part of a major trade and Gus will be the 2nd goalie.  When they determine direction Gus will be first to know, it's just a small courtesy.

Word out of Belleville was the Leafs were quite interested in Subban.  Seems the Leaf's presence at games has been steadily growing as well.

The same word out of Bellville has said the same of Gaunce for a while now too... Trade down from 5 to get Gaunce and then trade back into the late 1st round to get Subban? Oh, the possibilities!

Couldn't agree more!!....seriously why bother having training camp if you're not going to let people compete for jobs?  Why would you just give someone the #1 title if they haven't earned it yet??....

You don't guarantee anyone a starting spot unless its someone like Brodeur or Lundqvist
