Justin Schultz

TSNBobMcKenzie: Hearing NYR are out of running for Justin Schultz. Not going to NYC.

TSNBobMcKenzie: TOR also out on Justin Schultz.

Why not? 18 year old kid should feel lucky he's been drafted and actually wanted.

Players get drafted by the virtue of their own hard work and talent. They're under no obligation to make a career decision because that was recognized.

Well. That was fun. Have a good Canada day weekend folks.

Brodeur has given his all to NJ and there should be no regrets from Devils fans if he leaves, Schultz refused to even put on a Ducks uniform after being a 2nd round draft pick.

The draft is a process that has nothing to do with Justin Schultz. It was agreed to by a Labour Association that he is not a member of and was not represented by.

But, no, you're right. People shouldn't be allowed to choose who they work for. Companies should just be able to draft their rights and own them forever.

Pffff, we didn't really want him anyway.

Dare I say, he concluded that TOR has too much depth on D? My guess... Gretzky got to him. >:(

I'm sure someone will be along to tell us that this is a sure sign that Justin Schultz thinks the Leafs are so up and coming that they don't even really need him.

I know that I'm looking forward to running out the same lineup as last year so that we can build off of all that success.

With such a young team, having another year of experience behind them should be good for at least 2 or 3 more wins next season! 8)

Lindros refused to play for the team that drafted him and forced a trade. Karma ensured the team he refused to play with won two cups while he got squat. I'm happy about that.

Yeah, things worked out tremendously well for Quebec City.

Damn Gretzy and Coffey! >:(

#Oiler fans getting excited now. #Canucks out on UFA Schultz as well.

VAN is out on Schultz.

I saw Edmonton as the perfect fit since the beginning.  He can play big minutes, and grow alongside the other guys.  Makes too much sense.

Now, please don't let it be Ottawa. Don't want to deal with that right now.

Ottawa already has their quota of overrated NCAA superstars, don't they?

Schultz entered the draft willingly.  And no one here is suggesting that teams should own them forever.

There are professional associations all over the world that control the destinations of those that choose the profession.  It's part of the deal of getting into that profession.  These professional associations also control how many people can gain entry into the profession.

The argument that somehow the NHL draft is an infringement of personal freedom is a little far fetched.  You want to play pro hockey with the opportunity to make millions of dollars?  Well the line starts here, and here's how we do things.

Don't like it?  No problem, try the KHL, or start your own league...maybe try Subway, you can work at whichever franchise you choose.

Again, apparently the kid was soundly within his legal rights to do this.  I don't even have a problem with what he did.  I do, however, think that the person that pursues his career like this could perhaps have a character issue.  Hell, maybe his mom and dad are the ones controlling the situation.  Maybe the Ducks treated him like garbage.  I'm really just speculating here, but it's certainly not ridiculous to suggest that it could be the case.

Think of the investment as a draft pick being the currency by which talent is distributed in the NHL.  You buy a player's rights.  The player also has the right to refuse, and therefore using this currency to purchase a player that has no intention of being a productive contributing member of your organization would be a wasted investment, as you have a finite amount of draft picks.

Why even have a draft?  Like some have suggested lets just let all 18 year olds be free agents. Then it won't matter where you finish in the standings, no draft picks to trade, simplifies things!

Agreed on both parts. It might actually be fun seeing him on the high-flying Oilers.
