Justin Schultz

Quebec had a another superstar named Joe Sakic.  Had two 100+ point season and NO endorsements.  None.  In a single year in Philly, Lindros would of recouped his lost NHL wages in endorsements alone.  Quebec is also not the best place to be for English-speaking kids.  Heck even Luc Robitaille said he wouldn't play there.
I think Schultz just wanted to find the best fit for him.  It's like Coffey wanting to play with Gretzky, Messier, and Kurri.  Or should we say Yakapov, Hall, and Nugent-Hopkins?  The fact his only competition for #1 offensive defensemen on the Oilers is Jeff Petry, he probably chose wisely.

Leafs would have given up a second rounder to ANA if Schultz had been willing to sign last weekend. Was worth the gamble

As in the 2nd rounder we used on Finn? Yeah, not sure about that one.

Might be the best move that never happened.

I wonder if this puts to bed the rumours that the Ducks were potentially going to look at filing tampering charges, something that Michael Russo of the Star Tribune (Minnesota) intimated on the radio.

Of course, it's Schultz's right to sign, not sign wherever he chooses, so I'm not sure exactly what info Russo is privy to here.  Maybe that's why the Leafs offered the 2nd, to avoid a potentially messy situation had Schultz selected the Leafs.

It's too bad he signed with Edmonton but he has a great shot at earning top icetime given their shoddy blueline.

Also, Edmonton officially has a boatload of talent.

In hindsight I'd rather have Schultz than Finn but I'm sure if the deal had been made at the time I'd have thought it was a second round pick for a guy who'd have signed here anyways.

Oh I'd definitely have Schultz over Finn as well, but an unsigned Schultz that was a day away from becoming an unrestricted free agent? Not sure that's a risk I'd make. Although like you said, I'm sure if the deal had been completed Burke would have had some assurance that Schultz was signing.

I agree. I just read that Cox tweet to mean the deal would have been a conditional one.

First idea I had that he wasn't signing with the Leafs was when they picked Morgan Rielly at the draft, essentially the exact same skill set as Schultz,

Second, that pick made sense with the report that the Leafs were given a window by the Ducks and he wouldn't sign.

Third, was when Gardiner said his buddy wasn't saying much to him.

Finally, I was sure it was a no-go when I saw Burke alone being interviewed last night. He looked apathetic, not enthusiastic. There was no talk of a big Leaf contingent trying to woo him. I think they knew after they talked to him at the draft their chances were slim, and they just went throw the motions, and made other plans. Sort of like the Brad Richards thing last year.

I wonder how Gardiner feels about this.

He's probably curled up with a pint of Hagen-Daz, a bunch of Vodka coolers and a bunch of Twilight movies.

Or, you know, he's mildly disappointed and DM'ing girls for naked pictures.

Canucks fans are really steamed about this one, lots of sour grapes, who cares or out for blood. The kid will not get a good reception in his home province.

Never mind assurance - it sounds like the deal was conditional on Schultz signing. The deal doesn't go down without Schultz's signature on a contract.

Of course they are. He broke their narrative about how the Canucks are amazing and everyone who has a chance to sign there clearly will.
