Kypreos: PK Subban traded to Nashville for Shea Weber

An interesting point from Bruce Arthur. Lost in all the nuttiness of yesterday was how, in a year after no Canadian teams made the playoffs, two Canadian teams made almost universally panned trades and Stamkos decided to stay put.

So seems pretty likely Sportsnet is going to enjoy their ratings next year too.

I suppose these guys know the risks and just don't care but I can't for the life of me understand signing one of those long term deals with a future NMC that can be ignored.

I don't understand how a team could have the right to alter a contract without a player having an equal right. A contract is an agreement between two parties, where is Subban's agreement to waive that clause?

I've always been puzzled by how that is considered ok.

That's a risk that has been collectively bargained, it's part of the CBA, so it's part of the agreement.

If anyone ever wonders why all of Lamoriello's rules and cliched nonsense bothers me the way it does, look no further than everyone who is justifying the Subban trade today.

Hockey food for thought:  (and the late Herb Brooks said it best)...

If you're going to unnecessarily use an accent, at least use the correct one.  That's the most irritating of your 3 French errors.

Pour vous l'information, la langue fran?aise m'a permis de communiquer et de faire des amis avec des gens pendant que je voyageais (outre-mer) il y a plusieurs ann?es. il a ?t? longtemps et je pense que je suis une peu 'rouill?'. :)

Fixed.

I wonder if the PA will let Nashville get away with dishonouring any term of an already signed contract. When you trade for a player under contract, are you not required to take on all terms of the contract the player comes with?

It's stipulated explicitly in the CBA, which the PA helped draft and signed off on.

JvR has a similar modified-NTC on the UFA years of his contract, but we have no confirmation of whether or not the Leafs agreed to honour it after the Schenn trade.

I think it's moot. Other than fan fantasies, I haven't heard management say anything beyond JVR is untouchable.

One other thing about JVR's contract though, is that it was created under the previous CBA.  Was that same trade clause carried forward from the one prior?

This was Bergevin's response to a question regarding Andrew Shaw but it seems to obviously relate to Subban as well:

NHL.com: Andrew Shaw, who was acquired from Chicago during the draft by trade, brings some grit to your lineup -- two Stanley Cup titles and a knowledge of what it takes to win. What appealed to you about him?

Bergevin: Two Stanley Cups in five years. I like guys who don't like to lose. Everybody likes to win, everybody's happy when you win. I want guys, when you lose, it gets them inside. It hurts. And then you go back to work the next day.

I don't want a guy who walks out of the rink thinking, "Everything is cute, everything is fine even though we lost the game, life goes on." Yeah, life goes on, but I want guys who feel hurt by a loss. It's the culture that I want. It's the Chicago culture, that's what I want.

Andrew Shaw has it. I was in Chicago long enough to know they don't take losing with a grain of salt. I want guys who don't like to lose.

The rest of the interview has some other stuff about Subban and Weber as well.

I wonder if the Montreal fans want a GM who doesn't suck at his job?

I want guys who can't deal with losing. Who stop and slap random passers-by because they're so gosh darn angry. Being able to keep things in perspective? That's loser talk. If you're not yelling at your wife because you missed a backcheck, you don't have a place on the Habs.

Yep.  Except they'll have to get used to losing a lot more in coming seasons, until a new age coach and GM are brought in and can actually make progressive moves and have innovative coaching systems.

Not quite sure where to put this, but it sounds like culture change to me.

Was just informed by a source that the Montreal Canadiens let go of analytics specialist Matt Pfeffer.
