Kypreos: PK Subban traded to Nashville for Shea Weber

Friedman's thoughts at least partially answered my question of yesterday.  After deals like this there is a tendency for everyone to rush to one side of the ocean liner, and while I don't doubt that the Preds won this deal, it can't possibly be as one-sided as some are making it out to be.  You'd think Weber had become the new Derrian Hatcher.

I think it can be that one sided if you believe, as a lot of people do, that the Canadiens were very much motivated here by off-ice considerations.

Don't like the trade.  Weber is too old so this could look really ugly in a couple years.  As good as Weber is, they should have been able to get more for Subban and never should have traded him in the first place.

Unless they win the cup in the next couple years (obviously very unlikely) there's no way this deal is a win.  It will just look worse as times goes on.  Like most are saying, PK must have been a problem in the dressing room.  He seems like an annoying guy.  Even his post-trade comments were pretty telling "I've always felt wanted by the fans and the media...".  Forget the organization, it's very interesting that he didn't say teammates.

Bottom line, an aging defenseman, although elite, isn't enough for Subban.

I don't think most of us are saying that. Didn't really hear a lot about that when the team was winning.

I didn't mean on here, but it's a rumour that's been going on for years.

Yes, well, feelings about that rumour and what it might be based on have been discussed also.

So -- in your opinion, does racism play a part, even if subtly?  I tend to doubt it, but I hear the possibility talked about.

I've only heard that he was irritating, annoying etc.  What did you hear?

I strongly believe that, in less than 3 seasons, just how one-sided this deal is will be clear. There's a pretty convincing set of arguments that Subban is already the better player, and Weber is on the downside of his career. He's obviously not Hatcher bad, but, he doesn't have a ton of mileage left.

Sort of. I wouldn't say definitively one way or the other but I think that definitely hockey has a real problem with individuality and anyone not conforming to a very narrow set of expectations for how they should act. PK definitely didn't seem all that attached to the "Yes sir, no sir, just want to do whatever the coach tells me" mold.

To what extent that might be related to culture or exacerbated by race I can't say though.

I think you are pretty close to the mark here.

Yet the hockey world welcomes and celebrates Brent Burns.

So it looks like Subban no longer has a NMC, as Nashville is not honouring that clause in the contract that hasn't yet come into effect:

I suppose these guys know the risks and just don't care but I can't for the life of me understand signing one of those long term deals with a future NMC that can be ignored.

Nashville to Subban:  "We're so excited to have you play for us!  You're going to be a great addition to our team! Oh, your no-movement clause... yeah, we're not honouring that.  We think you're awesome!"
