Kypreos: PK Subban traded to Nashville for Shea Weber

Subban: "I feel a whole lot closer to winning a Stanley Cup after today's trade." Brutal honesty.

Subban was asked flat out if he felt unwanted in Montreal. Said he felt wanted by fans and community, and that Habs paid him a lot of money.

PK's the best.

Bottom line on the Subban trade, from an NHL GM: "If you think Subban is one of the 15 best D-men in the NHL, it's a bad deal.  I don't."

There's an NHL General Manager out there who thinks he can name 15 defenceman better than P.K. Subban.

Hands up if you're rooting for Nashville next season.

I'm a little tired of the charity they keep receiving.  Subban + Forsberg for Weber

I don't get at all why Montreal felt he had to go.

I think it's pretty clear they didn't consider him a fit going back to the way they grudgingly gave him his extension. I think partially it was due to the reason he was an alternate on team Canada; his game doesn't have the trust of the coaching staff to play in all situations. Whether on not it's valid, I have no idea, but when he coughed the puck up at the blueline this season he was basically scapegoated again by Therrien.

If I'm Subban, I'm thrilled about starting somewhere new.

PK is offensively gifted BUT horrendous defensively. Weber is a beast defensively and can hold his own offensively but no where near PK.

I mean, it's an obvious win for Poile, but unless you really think Bergevin is an idiot then you'd have to imagine there's some off-ice factors at play here that drove the deal.  (And no, I'm not suggesting racism among them.)

But what if I do?

Well, as a fellow Leaf fan I give you a fist bump. But I'm trying to be at least a little bit objective here.

I wouldn't say he's even close to "horrendous". He's a very capable defender. He's just more of a risk taker, and it makes the highlight reels a lot of nights, and occasionally for the wrong reasons. I'd take his skillset in a heartbeat, and his playing style, as-is.

Even though the rumours were out there, never thought Montreal would actually trade away Subban!

Nashville already had assembled a core that were controllable for a number of years so I really think this just helps them build on that further, really wouldn't be surprised if they are a Stanley Cup contender relatively soon.

P.K. is younger, put up a 60 point season, has better playoff numbers and won a Norris Trophy, all while still not at the peak of his career.

Count me among those who feel that Nashville will be the clear winner of this deal when all is said and done.

Weber's potential cap recapture penalties if he retires early (via stanleycupofchowder):

That whole thing was just insane by the NHL. I have no idea how it was approved. Imagine Weber retires with 1 year left on his deal?

Didn't the flyers create that contract and Nashville matched it to keep him?

Yeah, it was from their offer sheet. Which makes Nashville potentially being punished for it even crazier.

Subban/Nashville will be next years Kessel/Pittsburgh. Weber will win the Norris because he's due.

Since we are looking into the future, my crystal ball may be cloudier than yours but I see some problems with 30 year old legs and a big body defence man continuing to move at speed and be as physical as he was at say age 27, which just happens to be Subban's age.

I also see a more talented team in Nashville that had Weber as its mainstay defence man and still was unable to move to the Stanley Cup final. Then I wonder how a team in Montreal with less talent that thinks it can do so.

If Subban was the problem in Montreal (despite the denials from the same GM who said he was not shopping Subban and that Subban would be a fixture in Montreal of many years to come) then Montreal has a problem and it is not PKS.

For staters they need to keep Price healthy and then find some goal scoring. Weber is a nice addition but Subban is a hell of a subtraction.

I don't see this transactions as helping Montreal very much.

The Habs' coach and the GM are now on the clock.

Tick-tock boys. Tick-tock.

The meltdowns on other hockey forums by Habs fans has been nothing short of spectacular.
