Leafs 2017 Entry Draft

Swedish teams seem be fairly amicable to renegotiating those deals for guys that have been drafted and have a legit shot of getting into the NHL that season.

Yeah. Nylander had a contract with MODO for his post-draft season too, but he and his agent terminated it like within a week of getting drafted. Then the Leafs signed him to an ELC, and loaned him to Modo with a provision saying he could be recalled by a certain date.

For kicks, the oldest reference to Liljegren on this site goes to louisstamos:

Liljegren is being compared to Doughty, and most scouts say he could be 1-2 (with Nolan Patrick being the other).

...that said, it's still really far in advance.

Runner-up goes to Significantly Insignificant:

I didn't really know where else to put this, but here is Craig Button's review on the top 2 players in his mind for next years draft:

2. Timothy Liljegren: Elite defenceman who can impact the game everywhere on the ice. Smarts and vision that is reserved for the very few. Outstanding skater in every regard and uses it to gain advantages defensively and offensively. Puck play is excellent and can thread the needle with a pass or a shot. Has a game reminiscent of Drew Doughty with a splash of Erik Karlsson.

Corey Pronman's thoughts on the pick:

17. Toronto Maple Leafs
The pick: Timothy Liljegren, D, Rogle (SHL)
Nationality: Sweden | Pronman rank: 13

Scouting notes: You can tell when Liljegren has the puck. "He was able to quarterback a SHL power play when he was 16. You just don't see that," noted one scout. He's quite creative and quite skilled. He can make the in-tight plays and control the puck in ways that distinguish him as a puck mover. LIljegren skates very well and can get up in a rush, but it's his skill and offensive mind that elevate him to the highest levels. Although he's a very imaginative and effective puck mover, he can get himself into trouble. He gives the puck away a lot going for the one extra play. His defense isn't elite, but it's decent, as he can make a check and not get completely killed in his own end without the puck; however, there are times when he is a clear negative on that side on the puck.

Team fit: In Liljegren, Toronto gets one of the most dynamic players in the draft who had one of the most up and down seasons. He can blow you away with skill, but needs a lot of work away from the puck. With patience and more fortune in his development, Liljegren could provide Toronto with one of the top players in the draft -- or alternatively, a middling return.

Bettman leaning into the booing is by far the best Bettman.

Was just about to post this. He relishes in it now.

I mean I've said it for years but in booing him and not the owners you may as well be negotiating his extension for him.

That seems like a heck of a trade for St. Louis.

Seriously. A guy who was being talked about as a cap dump, a late 1st, and a conditional pick for Schenn. Big win for St Louis. Not sure why Philly does it.

FriedgeHNIC: Conditions on second pick from STL to PHI: top 10 protected, STL has option to push to 2019. If they do so, PHI also gets a third in 2020.

St Louis is still probably going to be pretty good next season, so, in terms of value, the picks are basically 2nd rounders. THat's not good value for a 50+ point forward.

Conditions are pretty good too. Top 10 protected pick with the option of pushing the pick to 2019(although then they have to throw in a 3rd).

It's a weird deal.

Yeah. Really don't get it. Don't free up cap space (only $425K difference - not enough to do have a significant impact), and trade a 20+ goal, 50+ point forward for what basically amounts to two early 2nd rounders. I guess it's typical Philly, but, still weird.

This is weird... On June 23rd, 2011 Philly traded Richards and Carter. June 23rd, 2012 they traded JVR. June 23rd, 2014 they traded Hartnell. And today, June 23rd, 2017 they traded Schenn.
