Leafs Accquire McCabe and Lafferty

I'll see how it nets out before getting too negative, but guys with averagish stats playing high pairings on shit teams for their careers don't necessarily translate to equal placement on good teams.

There's truth in that, but he won't be playing as difficult a role in Toronto as he did in Chicago. So, it won't really be equal placement. He won't be expected to carry his pairing as much as he was when playing with Caleb Jones. Defensive guys also usually translate their abilities much better from bad teams to good team than the equivalent offensive guys.

Bottom line is, with the two big trades, the Leafs are now a lot harder to play against than they were a few weeks ago.

Sam Lafferty was traded for Nylander (Alex) previously, and had played as defenseman as well. Finally getting some speed back onto the roster.

This. Especially for a defenseman coming into a group with better forward support.

This also suggests Ron Hainsey 2.0, for Rielly, which should free up Brodie to prop up another pair.

I really like the 2 trades.  Those 4 players are solid and the Chicago trade isn't for rentals!  Wow!

If RoR and Cookie are will to re-sign with the Leafs then this is even a GREATER win for Dubas and us.

Joey Anderson came from trading 7th rd pick Andreas Johnsson at his peak, and Pavel Gogolev was an undrafted free agent signing the Marlies were nurturing.

MLHS:

Goaltending aside, a few weeks ago, they clearly needed at least one forward and defenseman of consequence. They have added one of each as well as two additional utility forwards, to boot. Where the ROR add raises the ceiling, these two additions raise the floor.

The pieces are here to do something special. Now we wait to see how it all comes together, and how Kyle Dubas? summer bets on goalies and his coaching staff really pan out.

"Raising the floor" seems like a good way to describe this trade.

Losing a 2025 first rounder is a high price to pay, but TBH if the Leafs can't manage to go deep/win this year or the team landscape in 2025 is going to look like a plowed-over field anyway.

The rest of the price is inconsequential.

What really p***es me off is that due to
the stupid playoff structure after the first round some incredible Eastern teams are going to be out.

Pffft. Want to explode your sport Gary?

At minimum 1 v 8. In my dreams 1 v 16.

I mean in fairness to the 1v8

Current format

Boston v Pittsburgh
Toronto v Tampa

Carolina v NYI
NJ v NYR

1v8 format

Boston v Pittsburgh
Carolina v NYI
NJ v NYR
Toronto v Tampa

It's the same format.  It just gets bad in round 2.

Meh. If giving up yet another first rounder, I'd expect to get players that appreciably improve the team. I'm not sure that either of these guys move the needle much at all.
McCabe is a 2nd pairing D man. They're not cheap and the Leafs got him at half retained for 2 more years at 2M. Leafs D just got a lot better because Muzz left a pretty big hole.

I'm not going to say if it was a bit much as far as payment but McCabe being a 2nd pairing Dman might have something to do with him being on a crappy team. Not much of a D there.Haven't seen much of his play but read some good things. Should have had Kane in the deal amongst others. Now that would have been a trade.

Bettman's an idiot. Can't stand the guy or listening to his mouth. Guy had no clue about hockey still doesn't. Like the matchups could still be similar but what I hate is it seems you're playing the same teams first round year after year.

Funny how that works out, but in 1 v 8, the Leafs would have a chance to move up and play the Rangers or maybe even the Islanders. Now they are stuck with Tampa no matter what.

There must be a roster move coming in that a forward and/or D is going out.  Kerfoot I'm looking at you, maybe Sandin?  We'll see.

Holl and or Engvall can both go. That would make my day.McCabe replaces Holl and find another hard-nosed winger to replace Engvall as he will be a no show come playoffs.

Lets pick Ulmark for example, he was outstanding with a crap Buffalo team,

He wasn't in the top 10 of vezina voting in any of his years in buffalo. The reason he's where he is now is because goaltending, outside of maybe 5 guys, is a random crapshoot every year where average goalie can be elite, and reverse the next year.

All your Jakes are belong to us.

Speaking of which, I suppose this more or less confirms Muzzin isn't coming back?

They already said he's done for this year. Reassess in the summer.
