Leafs acquire Plekanec

Somewhere in the deepest depths of the ACC, the Leafs equipment managers are running around frantically trying to figure out where to get a blue turtleneck with a Leaf logo on it.

Hahahahaha

Sounds to me like all this amounts to a mild upgrade on Moore, who I thought was doing just fine.

Pro rated Plekanec would have around 33pts to Moore's 20. I'd say that's an upgrade. And Plekanec is good defensively. Either way if a C goes down we've got some depth. Good enough.

The 2nd round pick for a rental is not brilliant.  The rest is OK.

Also I'd just like to point out that Sportsnet somehow did not alert me to this trade until just now so, you know, the struggle continues.

Would you prefer to give up what Boston did? That's the going rate and we don't know if the Leafs plan on keeping him after this season.

I think he may be more of a 3c. His numbers are close to Bozak considering he's only played 9 mins on the pp to Bozaks 141(9 of 32 points). Pleks has 24 points with virtually no pp time. He also kills penalties which Bozak doesn't. He actually gives us a centre on the pk if Babs decides to use him for that. Bozak def kick his ass in the shootout tho.

Don't be like my brother in law. No matter what you pay for any product imaginable, he'll say you got ripped off and could have gotten a better deal .

Just a thought..The Leafs really now how 2 3rd lines instead of a 3rd and 4th with this move. That would mean more time for Kaps/Leivo?

I like the addition, but it feels expensive. Then I look at the other trades over the past few days and it feels less expensive. Part of it may be that I had higher hopes for Valiev than I should. I mean he's a long shot to be a top 4 shut down D right?

Thinking the Leafs paid too much here is basically saying you think the Leafs shouldn't have made any acquisitions of significance. A 2nd really is the minimum price for any sort of guy who's going to have a real impact on a roster.

That's a fair position to take, that the Leafs shouldn't have done anything, but let's not pretend like guys who'll fill a regular roster spot on a playoff team would fetch anything less.

Valiev, from Bobby Mac, tops out at a 3rd pairing guy who's on the bubble right now. There was no room for him here tho. Just like Rychel. Leafs essentially moved out pieces they don't see fitting in their future. They also lost a contract and this frees up playing time for our other D prospects.

edited...pointed out by Nik...Leafs didn't lose a contract.

Guys I get that this trade has a cost for the Leafs, but come on, it's only a second rounder and who knows if the team will do this well again in the future.  They have a real shot at the cup this season.  Things don't always align this perfectly.

Now, what I will be really upset about is if they trade a boatload of prospects for McDonagh.  I think this move was enough unless they can pull off something shrewd.  I wouldn't put it past Lou Lamoriello.  All they need is a somewhat better defenseman so they don't have to play Polak any more.  McDonagh is kind of overkill.  I'm even wondering about a Liljegren callup.

Ya that does make it sound better. I don't pay enough attention to the Marlies. It's like there's a mental block in me thinking the Leafs need to keep all their defensive prospects.
