Leafs @ Lightning - Apr. 8th, 7:30pm - SN, TSN 1050

Ya Clarkson i read somewhere if it wasn't for the puck bouncing off some part of his body he would have zero goals.
I now realize how true that is.

Why on earth did they think he was that good, and offer him that much dough?

I think there were probably about 12 teams that made offers on Clarkson. I don't blame the leafs in the slightest for anything but the term.

Bolland was doing that before he got hurt, and they were a better team because of it. Clarkson has been a disaster in that dept.

Yeah. It sort of makes you wish that they had given Bolland the big contract, and Clarkson's was the one that was expiring this summer.

Has he looked dangerous even once?

There were a couple moments where it looked like he might be able to create something, yes.

I get that he hasn't gotten much ice under Chippy the Chipmunk but I just don't see a whole there with him.

Just because other teams were intent on giving the Leafs a mistake contract doesn't exonerate the Leafs from any part of the contract they gave him. They should have known it was too much and walked away, regardless of what other teams were offering.

Ditto. I like the effort, but all I've seen him do this year is get punched in the face.

I think that's easy to say in hindsight. He was the most coveted FA in the offseason. As I said, the only thing wrong with the deal was the term. Until he decided to be terrible.

It's not hindsight. I, and many others, had Clarkson's real value pegged at much closer to the $3M-$3.5M range. No one expected him to be this much of a disaster, but, even before this season, $5.25M was way too much for what teams could reasonably have expected to receive from him. He's a 3rd line player. He's always really been a 3rd line player, even during the brief period when he was producing for New Jersey. You don't give a 3rd line player that kind of money. I don't care how coveted he was, he was never going to be worth $5.25M per season. The Leafs should have been smart enough to recognize that a weak UFA market significantly inflated his value and walked away.

This period pretty much sums up the Leafs roster: no leadership, no heart, no real chance.

You know this game epitomises the leafs problem. They need a dirty jam the net kind of goal and not one player wants to go there.

Congratulations to Colton Orr tonight.  He has now gone 90 games without a goal.  74 games without a point.
