Are you seriously making the case that a meaningful change to make after two of the worst performances in the team's recent history is to switch up what they do post-victory?

I never said it was a meaningful change to make, so no.

But if it weren't meaningful then why would it be something they do in response to the two losses? Why would that be a reason for the change? Changing things up after a loss, a bad loss even, makes sense if it's designed to actually implement change but that's pretty clearly not what this is. Change lines, change practice schedules sure but if someone on the Leafs had said "Well, the last two losses were pretty bad so we decided that everyone had to buy a new aftershave" I'm guessing we'd think it was a pretty odd response.

I mean, that doesn't even make sense from the standpoint of superstition. If it's something the Leafs have done after every win then a superstitious person would think it would continue.

Maybe they changed it last week and this was just the first win since.

Maybe. Wouldn't be in response to the losses then but that would be a possible answer.

Honestly, "We forgot" would be just as reasonable. I would agree with anyone who says that the salute itself doesn't mean a ton on it's own. However if there was a calculated reason for not doing it, that's something I might find moderately interesting depending on what the reason was.

Lupul had the best take IMO.  Said it feels fake to do it every time no matter what.

So, in a way, by not doing it the Leafs are adding some actual authenticity to it.

When I used to see them do the salute after every home win, I thought it was kind of unnecessary.

But stopping it now seems like just a stupid decision, these guys have been Leafs long enough to know how this would be covered by the media. Why would they want to deal with this even being a potential topic?

Hearing the media say this though is pretty funny though. It's like they are saying "They had to know we'd talk about it,so they shouldn't have done it". If that's the reason they shouldn't have done it, then how about you just don't talk about it?

I was driving around lunch time today and I had Leafs Lunch on TSN radio and they led off with "O-dog", McClennan and Hayes and led of with this topic, switched over to the FAN and they had Millard, Friedman and Cox interviewing Jim Nill about the Spezza contract. It's seems that on the radio, the roles are reversed. TSN is gimmicky and has sub par hosts and Sportsnet has more substance and just generally more interesting discussion.

That's sort of how I feel about it. They should do it when they mean it, and only when they mean it. It's sort of like the equivalent of a standing ovation that way.

I vote that this be the new salute:

I do understand Kessels outrage for the sweaters on the rink syndrome.  But the way the press reported it made me feel like Phil thinks this is indicative of all Leaf fans.
I personally think people whom throw jerseys on the rink are complete idiots and there self centered displays are defiant and childlike. Many people would love to have a Leaf jersey but just don't have the cash. I acutal think ACC should adopt a policy of escorting the fan in question out to the curb, with the message, you won't be back.
Regarding the snub, I lived without the salute for 44 years of my life and doesnt mean a thing for me.  Might be nice when the season is over as a thank you and see you on the links.

And really, when you think about it, aren't they really making a valid point about the inherent meaninglessness of this sort of ritual and ceremony on a larger scale? Real validation comes from within, from self actualization. Maybe by eliminating meaningless nods to the crowd, Dion and the gang are really making a point about the hollowness of our ceaseless quest for external validation?

Maybe they, as pro athletes, are inherently aware of their place on the vanguard of our misplaced priorities as a whole. I think it's really possible that the decision not to salute the crowd was done as a little push on our way to discover our truer selves.

I wish you were the Leafs PR guy during this.

Deep down, I think we owe an apology to Dion and the boys who we should remember have a responsibility to teaching and not just playing. Last night they served up a nice little lesson that we're people first, fans and players second.

Fire Carlyle.

That's awesome.  I vote we give Komarov the "C."  As in, the big Comrade.

It's interesting that you say that, because on most days when I happen to turn my radio on at lunch and Kypreos and MacLean are on, all I hear is a cacaphony of voices trying to interrupt one another.

So say we all.

I'm done being a fan of this team.  They personally disrespected everyone yesterday.  They are the worst people I have ever seen play hockey and I don't love them anymore.  That stick salute is what made me a fan....without it, I only have my compulsive need to watch the games, cheer for the team and to criticize Carlyle.  That's just not enough. That salute was everything.

I love the team but hate the players. I couldn't care less about the stick salute, but the fact that as a team they decided to stop saluting there fans after they've been doing it or awhile, well that goes to show the mentality of the leadership. I'm embarrassed to cheer for this quality of players. I went out and bought a leafs jersey last year and I couldn't think of one player on this team who is jersey worthy IMO obviously. I bought a Clark jersey. If we had a leader with half the heart of him, we wouldn't be in this predicament. This team has been in shambles since Sundin left.

If you don't think Kessel is jersey worth well I don't know what else to say.  Clearly you're not sponge worthy.
