Lightning @ Leafs - Nov. 20th, 7:30pm - TSN4, Fan 590

Stamkos:
?Let?s not kid ourselves. That?s not a bad hockey team over there. This media stuff that?s been going on the last couple days makes them seem like they?re the worst team in the league. They?re a good hockey team; they had a couple bad games,? he said of the Maple Leafs. ?They were better than us tonight, and not to take anything away from them, but we weren?t good.?

So when Stamkos doesn't sign here (although he definitely will) we can all blame the media.

Holy crap this is stupid. This tradition of saluting the fans after every home win isn't even all that old. The Rangers I think started doing it 2 or 3 seasons ago and everybody else just followed suit. Maybe there's a perfectly good explanation for this, like the players feel like it's being overused and is losing its significance.

edit: Looks like the Rangers actually started doing this after the first lockout, but I don't think it caught on league wide until the past few seasons.

Caught a bit of That's Hockey 2Night (shoot me) and they opened up talking about it by saying "another firestorm is brewing."

A firestorm!

On that hockey 2

they stated if this was planned then Dion should be stripped of the `c`

"It's disrespectful, it's deplorable, it's bush-league, and let me say this, they have a lot to answer for and if it was a planned exodus, I'll say this, if I was the manager, Dion Phaneuf would no longer be the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs" - Craig Button

hahahaha

I have found the salute has become forced and hate to say it, cheesy.  It was cute the first few times, but I don't see why it's so imperative to do it after every home win.  Leave it to either the last regular season or playoff game as a send off to the fans.

Agreed completely. It would work if it was spontaneous, but it's way too forced.

If it's so important I expect the media networks to broadcast the salute after every home win now and not cut away for post-game analysis or their next show.

The players only give the salute when the fans help them win. Last night's win was solely on the players. Fans just didn't pull their weight.

Just wanted to ask a question of you all.  Outside of JVR's  insessant chewing on his green mouthgard there was another thing that annoyed me to no limited extent.  Hate to complain about the small things but did anyone notice the graphic that was played about a million time with something (I don't know what the heck it was cause the graphic is about 2 seconds in length) slicing through ice on a rink, throwing up crystals or chunks of ice?  It was starting to really annoy me be the end of the game. and the bad thing is it will be used about another 100 million times this season.

Hoping it's okay if I don't take this latest Leaf "controversy" with even the slightest bit of seriousness.

Damien Cox: voice of reason?

Sign of the apocalypse? I would have expected him to be leading the charge lynching the players for this.

If it helps equalize the balance of the universe, Simmons is going all in on it.

Not really. I figured he'd be riding shotgun to Cox. If someone like Mirtle or Bruce Arthur was, on the other hand . . . that would totally balance the scales.

Oh I meant throw it back into it's normal rhythm, but I get you.

If only these media members mad about this would put their critical (ha) thinking towards work on the Leafs systems or something actually productive about the product on the ice.

Why put effort into researching and analyzing the actual hockey being played on the ice when you can take a completely insignificant moment and turn it into a massively overblown controversy?

So I've read a few articles about this and I'm starting to notice a trend. This is from Michael Traikos of the National Post:

So when the Leafs did not salute the fans by meeting at centre ice and raising their sticks in unison ? a tradition that the New York Rangers popularized years ago ? it was a non-gesture that might have been aimed at the wrong target.

...

I don?t know if the Kessel and the rest of the team purposely decided to snub Leafs fans after the game on Thursday. But if they did, they got it all wrong. The fans on Thursday were as good as you could have expected considering the mood around the team in the last seven days.

...

If it was planned, it was a passive-aggressive move that essentially poured gasoline on the fire in what is an already toxic relationship. Chances are the Leafs will deny their intent was to send a message. They might have simply wanted to acknowledge that they got themselves into this mess and they got themselves out of it.

All these articles based on a theory the media made that the Leafs did this as an FU to the fans. Also, not a single quote from anybody from within the Leafs organization. This guys have access to the team right? Have they bothered to ask what's up here?

No because it's a super important thing that the Leafs didn't do just none of them noticed until well after the game when it was publicized.
