Boston has lost 2 straight, that's not good news for the Leafs because they'll be in a foul mood on Tuesday.

And if they were on a winning streak, it'd be bad news because they are rolling.

Yeah it's just bad news unless Carlyle is a magician.

Armstrong is currently practicing on the 3rd line with Steckel & Kulemin. Maybe Carlyle is looking for some more beef/grit on the third line.

It's definitely a line that's a little more suited to matching up against another teams top line, although Steckel's speed worries me when matched against a top-line centre.

at first when i found out boston was the next game i thought..crap ...but now i'm not so sure..if they lose to boston it'll of course be business as usual..but if they win ..even if it's due to boston just playing like crap for a game..it'll give them one hell a confidence boost..and this team could use a few of those ...if it has any hope of pulling this off

They need to win 2 of the next 3 against 3 good teams.  Of course, repeat "they need to win 2 of the next 3" all the way til the end of the season.

They may need to play even better than that.  I ran the numbers a few games back and got over .765

I was basing that on 93 points though, the threshold may be lower this year.

Course I ain't no math whiz.

We need cw's genius to give us the official number.

That's usually followed up by the realization that Detroit is the only team currently hitting the resulting winning percentage.

Ok, I'm not cw, but by my math the current pace for 8th in the East is Washington at only 87 points. That means that if that holds the Leafs would only need 21 more points in their remaining 17 games. They would need to go 10-6-1, or 9-5-3, or so to make it in.

Still a big "IF" on no one catching fire out of that group around them.

The biggest concern is that the Leafs have the toughest schedule of the bunch - they have 9 current playoff teams left out of 17. For comparison, Winnipeg only has 7, Tampa & Buffalo have 8. The Caps have 9 like us.

It's turning into an interesting race.

EDIT: I see cw beat me to the punch in the other thread, but the math's the same - we need to get to 88 points based on current pace

Connolly is one of 4 skaters in 4th line jerseys at practice today, so for it would appear that 2 of Brown, Rosehill, Connolly, Crabb,  and Lombardi will be healthy scratches.

Carlyle said that unless something unforeseen happens, Connolly will be in. He was practicing with the PP at practice today and given his play on the PK it looks like he's being kept in as a specialty teams guy, which is alright with me. And Brown left practice early today and is nursing a minor injury, so he could be out.

this would be a bad game for brown to be out..i hope that's not the case

I think brown brings more intangibles to the table than rosehill...but that's me

You could be right but how much the difference is probably could be served better by either Crabb or Boyce, any other Marlie with a slight taste...

Maybe half the problem with this team is just what Randy has been saying.  The guys need clearly defined roles.  Having a bunch of Joey Crabbs filling out your bottom two lines is maybe going to get you more of what we have seen all season.  Joey is a decent player but not real good at anything in particular.  If Rosehill is up and told to do a job at least he can throw a punishing check or play with some grit and be pretty good at that role at least.

Good point, you could be right about that.

I disagree about Crabb. He has been one of the hardest forechecking forwards on this team. Always goes in with a heavy hit.

I want to see how these guys respond to Carlyle in the next 10 games or so.  We should start to see who his go-to guys are real quick, and which players he throws into the doghouse for not working hard enough.  I really liked his move of throwing Frattin up with Grabovski last game, he really played a good game and played a lot.  Should be interesting to see where year long busts like Connolly end up under Carlyle.

Based on practice reports yesterday, I would guess Connolly ends up on the 4th line with getting spot time on the power play.

For now, i'm talking over the span of the next few weeks.  Leafs aren't going to want a guy on the 4th line making $4.75 million.  If he doesn't significantly improve under Carlyle he'll be gone soon.
