Depending on the conversation, I don't think you need to be officially hired yet (or resigned).
For example, someone looking for a new job (while currently employed) goes in for an interview and it gets to the stage where he or she meets all the higher ups and important folk. In this case, John Tavares is important folk.
I don't think it was a contract negotiation for Tavares. And I'm pretty sure the Leafs have given Lou (and Hunter) permission to pursue other courses if they wish. Honestly, it would be better for Dubas to not have those names looming silently around him and give him an opportunity to install his down people.
