Luongo refused to waive ?no trade? to join Leafs

If true, that's a blessing

Considering the source, I have some doubts about its veracity.

Totally agree.

I said it as a joke in the GDT, but it wouldn't surprise me if talks are back on between Nonis and Gillis for Luo.

I don't get why Luongo would be an option at this moment.

I've been one who has said I'd gladly take Luongo as a Leaf.  But the way this season has gone, what's the rush in acquiring him within the next 48 hours as opposed to waiting until the off-season?

Better yet, why acquire him at all with that contract.

I am with you on this one.  During the lock out I was thinking that Luongo could stabilize the young goalies but after the season the Leafs have had so far I hope the young goalies can get some valuable experience in the pressure cooker of the stretch run to the playoffs and then in the playoffs themselves.

A veteran goalie brought in right now would totally destroy this opportunity.

That really depends on the goalie. The Leafs need a veteran #3 type, just in case Reimer or Scrivens gets hurt. The guys behind them on the depth chart aren't ready to be counted on even as backups yet.

Agree too. MacLean is a bit of a blowhard and won't shy away from any opportunity to make himself look good.

However, IF it was true and (likely) Burke was going to trade for Luongo, who knows what nightmare package he had offered that may have set the organization back even further (Kadri, Gardiner, 1st??).

If VAN could be made to eat enough of his contract, then it would make sense.  That's the beginning and the end of this debate, at this point, because the Leafs in no way need Luongo right now.

Of course, Gillis may still be living within his own private delusional landscape.

Why do I have this ever growing feeling that Luongo will be a Leaf by 3pm on Wednesday? Right or wrong, that's just what my gut is telling me right now.

The same Burke who put together this current team that is now 8 games above .500, and with one of the youngest line-ups in the league? I doubt very much he would have offered anything close to the package you've mentioned here.

Because your believing all the crap the media is feeding us. like I said all along we dont need a goalie and therefore are not going after one. at most a third stringer in case of an injury. but to replace Reimer no chance. we need a stay at home defenceman.

Really? I thought the media was feeding us Kiprusoff for a draft pick?

DarrenDreger: Tor and Van had additional discussions re: Luongo trade. Sounds like Canucks still want more than Leafs are willing to give. #tradecentre

TSNBobMcKenzie: VAN talked to TOR after Derek Roy trade, just to let Leafs know parameters of potential Luongo deal have changed. No longer require C.

TSNBobMcKenzie: But VAN still feel need to get something tangible for Luongo to help Canucks down stretch and into playoffs. Still may be an issue for TOR.

With the Higgins re-signing, the Canucks have 15 players signed for next season. But the Canucks only have $1.3 mil in cap space left to sign 8 more players.

All NHL GMs know that Gillis must dump Luongo by then. He's not going to get much for him unless the NHL GM who does give him something of substance is a complete idiot.

It is likely that Booth and Ballard are amnesty buyouts waiting to happen this summer. That gives them a little more room (an extra $8.5M), but still leaves things pretty tight - just under 10M for 10 players.

Ballard and Booth buyouts would give them 10 million for 10 players or so.

If Luongo doesn't get dealt today they might buy him out in the summer and keep Booth.

The Leafs could send MacArthur straight up for Luongo.

I'm sure some of that is in the works.

They gave up a bundle to get their mitts on a dman who they gave #6 minutes to ... and now look to buyout.

.. if Gillis is fired first. I can't see him surviving trying to get approval for a $40+ mil, 9 year compliance buyout of Luongo when that's a contract he arranged just 3 years ago.
