Mitch Marner: what now?

If the Leafs lose Marner to an offer sheet, I imagine we'll get about ten games of "Good, to hell with Mitch Marner, who does he think he is? I'd rather have the draft picks" before each and every loss is blamed on a lack of a secondary scoring and prompts a discussion about how the Leafs desperately need a Mitch Marner-type.

Thanks guys.

I would love to see the Islanders sign him and then watch them fall apart without Lehner to back them up....

That's Jeremy Bracco's music!

Nylander proceeds to put up 90+ pts with Tavares.

Of course they want a Marner(type) but not at 12 mill. Leafs could actually sign him for that but someone has to go to make up the extra 2 mill.

As we just saw with Panarin, that's more or less what it'll cost you.

He's not Panarin so no.

True. Panarin has never scored as much as Marner. That's why I said more or less. If you want a guy that good, that's probably what it'll cost.

And as we just saw with Aho it's shouldn't .

We are already top end heavy and unlikely to be able to improve the lineup because of it. If Marner signs a sheet that gives the Leaf's 4 firsts I take it and move on. Use that money to ensure we can keep a decent backend and our high end centers will have to tow a winger along with them. That's the price they have to pay for their contracts. Or Nylander needs to move for same reason.

If Marner signs an OS with anyone at any price I'll east my MAGA hat.

There aren't that many teams that can afford the contract, even less if you consider if he wants to go there. Maybe 2 or 3 teams.

You mean besides the previous 2 seasons before this one where he outscored Marner?

They don't count. And like it or not Bread man was a ufa. For whatever reason they cost more.

I was just referring to career highs. Panarin has never hit 90 points despite being older and getting a ton more ice time than Marner.

That's my whole point. If you're going to ever sign someone to try to replace Marner then realistically you'll be signing a UFA and, as we just saw with Panarin, even a guy who probably isn't quite as good as Marner more or less costs the amount of money we're blanching at giving Marner.

I don't think we need someone "as good " as Marner. We could afford 2 at half as good and I'm not sure that makes us a worse team.

He does have the edge in terms of track record as a goal scorer, though, even if it may not be significant going forward. And, then there's the whole UFA vs RFA thing, which, while the gap there is definitely closing, is still a factor.

That being said, Marner valuing himself in the same range as Panarin is definitely justifiable.

Sure but then Panarin is a 30+ goal scorer and has never played with Tavares either.

Admittedly. He played his first two seasons, where he had those 30 goal seasons, with someone who's significantly better offensively than Tavares.

Imagine how boring things are going to be for a month and a half before the season starts when Marner finally signs a 2 year bridge for $8m per...
