NHL's 24-team Return to Play proposal

League will be in charge of disclosing non-playing status during phase 4 and will not detail injuries, ostensibly to avoid people guessing who caught Covid.

Well, colour me surprised. If I was a betting man, I'd say that a) his contract status is a big factor and b) there wasn't interest to re-sign with Calgary.

Not saying that these might not have been factors, but last year his infant daughter had to be hospitalized with a respiratory illness. That was the central reason he gave for opting out.

But now I'm just going to guess that any player not playing has caught Covid...

Simmons is tweeting very pettily about this

Mike Green (Edm), Roman Polak (Dal) (nominally), Steven Kampfer (Bos), and Zach Trotman (Pit) have opted out.

Is he really wrong though? The other leagues have been more forthcoming with disclosure.

I?ve said it myself, and thus agree with him completely ? there should be absolutely no stigma for testing positive. The only reason you would want it unknown is if you did something stupid, selfish and negligent like Djokovic did.

The first thing asked on Monday to Matthews will be about whether in fact the report was true.

Medical privacy in this matter is what the players wanted as part of this Return to Play process. I agree a covid diagnosis shouldn?t be a matter of stigma, but that?s not the issue with Simmons. He is very clearly using their situation for his own gain in drama clicks?granted that is his job at Postmedia?and chafing that his industry is not backing his ethically sketchy play.

Stigma, no. A right to privacy about medical health however is something that seems unnecessary to debate.  Being a professional athlete shouldn't obligate your health information be disclosed.  The plan doesn't block public health from knowing this information to do contract tracing, simply to limit the spread of this information about who is testing positive in general.  If the player wants to disclose it they are free to do so.

I think the only reasons other leagues have been more forthcoming with this information is because it's affecting their travel plans as they move people around. The NHL hasn't started sending people to their bubble yet so they don't have to answer things like "Why wasn't so and so on the plane?"

This still seems like a disaster waiting to happen. That applies to all the North American sports leagues. The Toronto FC game cancelled this morning should be a cautionary tale.

I don't think I saw it anywhere, but are the games just taking place at the ACC?  Or can they mix in Coca-Cola Coliseum to try and salvage the effects on the ice?

I think that would make sense why they chose Royal York.

100%. I wonder how many players to test positive it would take to get teams to forfeit the playoffs.

Multiple Canadiens are reported to have tested positive. Quebec has been struggling to contain the viral spread relative to the rest of Canada.

It's really embarrassing that there's basically no members of the current generation of NHL media who's really going after the league for this. The cap and, I hate to say it, the analytics have people so focused on details that it doesn't feel like anyone is actually left to talk about big picture stuff. For Cox to be the only real media voice willing to take a crack at the league is pretty sad.
