Nonis using depth to go shopping....

I'm not 100% sure that Komarov left for the money. He left because he wanted more playing time going into an Olympic year. He wanted more exposure.

I think him doing that is kind of accepting to the role he's suited for in the NHL

He did admit that he didn't get the offer he was hoping for, so money did play a role somewhat. But given how tight the Leafs cap situation was I'd be surprised if the offer was much over $1mil. The Leafs might be able to open their wallets a little more this summer depending on what goes down with guys like Franson and Reimer.

I want him back, he was without doubt, one of our best energy guys, and for any team to go far they need these kind of players. The Leafs had better think long and hard when it come to him, I believe he brings it every game.

Now that Fraser has been moved, more speculation from Mirtle "More Moves Coming for Cashed-Strapped Maple Leafs:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/leafs-beat/more-moves-coming-for-cap-strapped-maple-leafs/article16632232/

"With everyone healthy, the Leafs now have 25 players on the roster and are $1.73-million over the cap, meaning at least three of the following six forwards will likely be waived or demoted in the coming days: Peter Holland, Carter Ashton, Trevor Smith, Frazer McLaren, Troy Bodie and Colton Orr.
- snip-
The three best choices to send down would be Orr, McLaren and Ashton, but that won?t be the way the Leafs go given their affinity for the two enforcers on the roster and having a little-used fourth line. That will likely mean someone like Holland or Smith is a casualty along with Ashton and Bodie, who have both been useful in limited roles during Toronto?s recent hot streak."

I certainly hope they don't put Holland on waivers, and I'm fairly certain they won't as they will be giving him and a pick away for basically a few games played.  Orr and McLaren would be a dream made in heaven.  Bodie has been making a case for himself, and Carlyle seems to really like him, so I doubt it would be him.

My picks - Orr, McLaren and Ashton.  Let someone else pay for his nose reconstruction.  :P

Holland is exempt from waivers.

Holland doesn't have to clear waivers to be sent back to the Marlies. Neither does Ashton. Bodie is eligible for waivers if he plays another 2 games.

What's up with Mirtle making me look bad like that?  I thought he was supposed to know these things...  >:(

My preference would be to send down Orr, McLaren and Smith, but, we all know that's not going to happen. Orr's not going anywhere, unfortunately, but, it wouldn't surprise me to see McLaren demoted. He's been a scratch most games he's been healthy for and would likely clear without issue. He's pretty much been replaced by Bodie.

Nonis has done some smart things with the roster lately, if McLaren stays up I'll be very disappointed. I'm guessing we see McLaren, Ashton, and one of Smith/Holland go down.

That's pretty much what I'm expecting, as well. My concern is that they'll keep Smith ahead of Holland.

The way I see it is they'll keep Holland if they feel like he can still play in the top-9 when the roster is healthy. Either he or Bolland would have to move to the wing in that case. They'll keep Smith if they can't find a spot for Holland and Smith and his league minimum salary will occupy the pressbox while Bodie, McClement, and Orr play on the 4th line.

Mirtle never said anything about waivers.

Now you're trying to make me look bad!!!!

You're right, and I never noticed the 'waived or demoted' wording in my own post, I just saw 'casualty' and assumed... never mind.  I'm old, OK?  I'm old...  :-[

In other news, I've successfully revived this thread after nutman sent it to its grave a couple of weeks ago.

Ashton is guaranteed one of the guys gone, he brings absolutely nothing except a punch able face. One of McLaren/Orr would be nice to go too, I seriously doubt if they'd get rid of both goons.

Joking.  Yours was the last post nearly 2 weeks ago.  ;)

8-1-1 stretch: 1 fight (McLaren vs. Boston)

Sure need facepunchers.

That's severely undervaluing Ashton.

How many players who bring absolutely nothing get multiple breakaways?  How many 4th line Leafs have had breakaways in recent memory?

He's just had bad luck offensively, it'll come eventually.  He's actually perfect right now for the 4th line - can hit, can cycle, can handle the puck, has shown offensive skill at other levels, including the AHL.

I'm not saying he's the next coming of Wayne Gretzky, but he certainly brings something to the table, and I'd argue it's something this team needs for its depth moving forward.  He's certainly farrrrrrr better than Orr/McLaren.

Dreger on Kulemin:

Dreger on #TSNDrive: #Leafs taking calls on Nikolai Kulemin.

More on Kulemin from @DarrenDreger: "This isn't going to be for a draft pick, Toronto needs a player they can insert into their lineup."

TSN Radio ‏@TSN1050Radio  11m
Dreger said that for a 3rd line player, Kulemin will likely be too expensive for #Leafs. #TSNDrive

Dreger also wouldn't rule out that #Leafs would use Kulemin as their own rental, but Leafs are at least gauging interest of market #TSNDrive

I think I would be ok with that if we are talking about when Bolland comes back.  He wouldn't deserve the demotion but where do you play him at that point.  Maybe you can move him to the wing but I think the Leafs are going to demote/trade McLaren, one of Ashton/Bodie and one of Smith/Holland.

The lineup to me would likely be

Kessel's line
Kadri's line
Bolland-Clarkson-Raymond
Orr-McClement-Smith
Ashton/Bodie

I'm not sure that I want Holland on the wing, let alone on the 4th line where he would likely get under 5 minutes a night.
