Official Music Thread

I too wish that more people would have internet discussions on the morality of religion vs science in a music thread and proceed with the same zeal and fanaticism decried against religions.

With great certainty, I can say that yelling at people from a keyboard and casting scorn and derision on their core values and beliefs is a time-tested and effective way of changing minds in a constructive manner.

Meh. The music thread was derailed when the topic of the bombing at a concert happened. Had nothing to do with music.
Could have been in another thread.

Yeah, I am passionate about the topic, I should have shown restraint. Has nothing to do with fanaticism and it will not change the minds of those who believe. Only they have the power to open their minds and question the doctrine.

I believe you and I understand where you're coming from even though we probably don't agree on a lot of those conclusions. I don't know you personally and can only gauge based on what words are used and how they are perceived to be used, so a confrontational stance from the get go is only going to beget fruitless confrontation despite the dream of a rational worldview and a noble desire for others to stop hate and violence (which I definitely admire).

I think the way some things were said earlier could very easily have hurt some members here if it hadn't already. People are already at each others' throats for hot-takes on hockey; this topic is about 4-5 levels up the emotional intensity meter.

I think you really hit the nail on the head with this particular word (not in reference to leafsjunkie, but in terms of the discussion at hand). The problem the world needs to address is fanaticism, not religion. Fanaticism exists outside of religion, and it won't go away if religion goes away. The people who crave power will just find different buttons to push the fanatics to do despicable things for them.

Religion is an easy target, because it's the veil which fanaticism often hides behind in our world. It's the excuse people use to justify their hatred.

I will end on this note.

As hockeyfan1 mentioned, every religion has its extremes (on both ends of the spectrum), and I'd posit that this extends to any belief, secular or otherwise.

Fanaticism (which is literally part of this site's name, btw!), is one of those things that is part of our psychological (and physiological) build. I linked the Oatmeal's comic on the Backfire Effect earlier, but that's basically where I think it comes from: protectionism of core beliefs to the point of cognitive dissonance, wherein the core belief is exploited to consolidate power. As SI also alluded to earlier, technology makes it very easy to get caught up in our positive feedback loops of agreement.

I'm only going on the first 20 seconds of this video that I'm presuming is a mic drop; this probably isn't going to help your cause.

I now have concert tickets to a bunch of shows upcoming:

Echo n Bunnymen with Violent Femmes
X
Arcade Fire
The National
Courtney Barnett with Kurt Vile

Psyched for them all

I have front row for The National. Pretty psyched as well. Going to Chili Peppers too next week.

On the release note, looking forward to picking up the new Royal Blood disc. Also love the National's first single.

I saw Arcade Fire on Tuesday night. Great gig with one of the most chilled out happy crowds for a gig I've seen in ages.

Seeing Radiohead this Tuesday for about the 15th time after first seeing them 20 years ago yesterday

Radiohead gig last night was absolutely superb. Possibly the best
I've seen them and a great setlist with some great old classics in among the new stuff which translates really well to being played live.

I've seen the National about a half dozen times over the years. Amazing sound live.. Plus Matt Berninger gives it his all in every show

Nice

I saw Arcade Fire a few years ago. Fun concert.

One of the funniest lines I heard from a fellow member of the audience.

"Wow, I never expected so many parents to attend this concert."

This from an approx 20 year old man.

My friend and I were one of many attending that were approx 50 yrs old.

lol

Saw tool twice last month. Metallica coming up this Sunday.

What Tool is touring?  Are they ever releasing a new album?

Supposedly yes to a new album.

Didn't hear any new songs in either of the concerts I saw in Montreal or Toronto. Both shows were identical except for maybe 1 track. They sounded great.

I still remember when they released 10,000 Days..I had one child that was under 6 months old.  Now I have 3 kids ages 11, 9 and 5.
