All-Star weekend in Ottawa will include All-Star goaltender Elliot.  :o

That's got to feel pretty good for Elliott - good on him.

Assuming one of your guys is a captain, I think it would be good form for them to select Elliot in short order, don't you?

I really hope Elliott gets a big cheer in Ottawa.

There seems to be quite a few Sens fans that boo former players for no reason.  Who are these people who boo Hossa/Chara?

There haven't been any boos for Hoss since Heater bailed on us and the only people who boo Chara now are the Sens fans with Habs jerseys on underneath. I agree with you though - I hope Elliott doesn't get booed.

I've given this a bit more thought - if one of our guys is Captain <Alfie> I want him to pick Kessel first. What better Jedi mind trick is there?

I really hope Kessel gets picked last again.  It's done wonders for him so far.

Greening gets invite to 2012 NHL all-star weekend
Sens forward joins rookies participating in SuperSkills event at Scotiabank Place

Senators forward Colin Greening is among 12 rookies named to participate in the Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Skills Competition during all-star weekend festivities at Scotiabank Place (Andre Ringuette/NHLI via Getty Images).
Add another Senators name to list of players taking part in 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend festivities at Scotiabank Place.

Forward Colin Greening is among a list of 12 rookies named today by the National Hockey League to participate in the Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Skills Competition, set for Jan. 28. The league also announced the 36 players who'll fill out the rosters for the 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game, to be played Jan. 29 at Scotiabank Place.

While Greening had heard some talk among his teammates that he might get the all-star call, he admitted being taken aback when head coach Paul MacLean delivered the news.

"Guys mentioned a few weeks ago that (this) could be a possibility, but I really had no expectations," Greening told Sens TV. "It did take me by surprise today. A lot of guys today we?re saying ?you?d better be checking your phone to see if you?re in the rookie thing.? I guess it finally came (true) and Paul was nice enough to tell me."

Greening joins forwards Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek, along with defenceman Erik Karlsson, as part of all-star weekend. The four Senators were voted into the contest in fan balloting, with Karlsson rating as the top vote-getter in that process, which concluded Jan. 4.

"It's great and those guys deserve to be in there," Greening said when asked about having so much Senators company on all-star weekend. "It'll be fun to have a lot of familiar faces there, but it's going to be nice to see all the other all-stars, too, and meet all the other rookies. So it's going to be a fun weekend."

The addition of Greening gives the Senators the largest contingent for all-star weekend, which is being playing Ottawa for the first time. The 25-year-old native of St. John's has been a standout at Sens Skills presented by Metro the last two years, winning the fastest skater event in record time on both occasions. He was also a runner-up in the hardest shot competition in 2010-11.

Four members of the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Canucks were among the veterans and rookies added to the lineup for the all-star game. Players from all 30 teams will be represented, with forwards Henrik and Daniel Sedin and defenceman Alexander Edler chosen for the all-star game and forward Cody Hodgson added to the rookie contingent for the skills competition.

The Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers had three players selected ? goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, defenceman Dan Girardi and forward Marian Gaborik. The defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins had two players named ? forward Tyler Seguin and defenceman Zdeno Chara. Bruins goalie Tim Thomas was voted into the game by the fans.

Forwards Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul of the Maple Leafs were among the additions, joining Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf, who joined Karlsson as the two defencemen finishing on top of the fan balloting.

Also added to the roster Thursday were five goaltenders, among them the Red Wings' Jimmy Howard, who leads the league in wins, and the Blues' Brian Elliott, a former Senator who is second in the NHL in goals-against average and save percentage.

Among the nine defencemen added were the Panthers' Brian Campbell and the Jets' Dustin Byfuglien, who last were teammates in 2010 to help the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup. Also added from that championship Blackhawks team were current Hawks forwards Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa.

Also going to Ottawa will be Predators teammates Shea Weber and Ryan Suter. Joining them will be teammate Craig Smith, from the rookie pool.

The NHL's top nine scorers all will have a place in Ottawa ? the Sedins, Kessel, Lupul, the Flyers' Claude Giroux, the Lightning's Steven Stamkos, Hossa, the Penguins' Evgeni Malkin and Spezza.

Other forwards added to the roster include Flames captain Jarome Iginla, who last week became the 42nd player in NHL history with 500 goals; Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, who will play in his fifth all-star game; and the Red Wings' Pavel Datsyuk, who was named to his third all-star game.

Two captains will be named for the all-star game next week, with Alfredsson ? the NHL's current longest-serving team captain ? widely expected to be one of them. They'll choose the teams when the 2012 NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft is held Dec. 26 at the Theatre du Casino du Lac-Leamy in Gatineau.

Karlsson 'feeling fine,' eager to take aim at Rangers
Senators defenceman ready to roll again after one-game absence with minor injury

Erik Karlsson figures he did the right thing ? for both himself and his teammates.

But after sitting out one game, the National Hockey League's highest-scoring defence says he's eager and ready to face off against the Eastern Conference-leading Rangers tonight at Madison Square Garden in New York (7 p.m., Sportsnet East, Team 1200).

"I'm feeling fine and I should be ready for tonight," Karlsson said after taking part in the Senators' pre-game skate earlier today at the Garden. "As of right now, there shouldn't be any problem."

Karlsson pulled himself out of Tuesday's matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins after suffering an upper-body injury "when I was doing things on my own" during the warmup at the Consol Energy Center. But two days later, he's convinced the issue is now behind him.

"It was just a little tweak and I didn't feel very good at all," said Karlsson, who's totalled 41 points (6-35) in 43 games for the Senators. "I've had it before, but not this bad and not right before a game. So we played it safe and it turned out pretty good anyway. It was probably the right thing to do."

The fact the Senators recorded a 5-1 win also made the decision a little easier to swallow.

"I was pretty mad at myself and my body right then," said Karlsson. "Sometimes, you've got to do what you've got to do. (It was better to) rest one game instead of playing it and not play good and not helping out your team ... that's what I felt, I wasn't able to go out and be a contributor to our team.

"I decided to rest, we came away with a 5-1 win and Carks (Matt Carkner) played great. So I'm pretty happy about my decision."

Naturally, the Senators (23-15-6) are most happy to have one of their top players back in the lineup against the red-hot Rangers (27-9-4), who have won five straight and now own the top record in the National Hockey League.

"Erik's obviously a very important player for us," said Senators head coach Paul MacLean. "He generates a lot of offence for us and is arguably our best player. Any time you get one of them back, it's good for your team."

Added forward Nick Foligno: "He's such a big part of our team and such a great player and an all-star. It's going to be great to have him back. He just adds that dimension ... he's another dangerous player that other teams have to watch for and we hope to continue our success with him."

The Rangers aren't the only hot team hitting the ice tonight. Ottawa is on a 9-1-2 run that has propelled it to fifth spot in the Eastern Conference standings. However, MacLean knows the teams' third matchup of the season ? they split the previous two ? should provide a benchmark game of sorts.

"Right now, they're the No. 1 team in the league," he said. "The biggest thing they've done is be consistent night in and night out in how they play the game. They do it the same way and they do it harder and longer than you do, and they get timely goaltending. Their best players are playing real well for them. To me, it's the consistency of their team play that's gotten them to where they are.

"We have to make sure we match it, at least, and give ourselves an opportunity (to win)."

Around the boards

MacLean doesn't believe it's mere coincidence that the Senators have gone 8-1-2 since acquiring centre Kyle Turris from the Phoenix Coyotes. "He's solidified the depth of our team and given us a legitimate second-line centre that we can play against anybody in the league," said MacLean. "He's generated points from that position as well. But for me, he makes us a deeper team and a harder team to defend" ... Craig Anderson, who's 6-0-1 in his last seven appearances, makes the start in goal ... Ottawa is 4-0-0 in its last four trips to Madison Square Garden ... The Senators wrap up their road trip Saturday in Montreal against the Canadiens (7 p.m., CBC, Team 1200).

It seems Craig Anderson didn't like the mean things I was saying about him.  Is that 1 goal against in the 2 games since I labelled him a disappointment?

Also, Karlsson returns with 2 points and a +1 rating to go along with some manhandling of a forward who has 8 inches and 65 pounds on him.

The Sens have become like a case of Herpes.  Just when you think they're gone, they come back.  Honestly, if Toronto and Ottawa make the playoffs and Montreal doesn't... I'll be good with that.

I was going to give it 5 games before I brought it up again...  ;]

Alfie was clearly bored with winning in overtime.  Had the score the only goal in the shootout as the last shooter for the win.  What a drama queen.

Lidstrom (among others) thinks it'd be a good idea to have Alfy and Phaneuf as the captains for the all-star game:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/daniel-alfredsson-vs-dion-phaneuf-nhl-star-captains-220408053.html#more-22530

Gotta admit, it'd probably be the most entertaining choice of captains and add an element to the game that the fans might appreciate. Especially if their picks match what the article suggests.

Phaneuf should be one of Alfie's alternate captains, and he should refuse to pick Kessel.

Seriously though, it should either be someone from the Western conference or Zdeno Chara, the cup winning captain.  Although, that would prevent Alfie from selecting Chara himself, which would be a bummer.

I wanna catch Boston before their games in hand bite us in the ass.  I'd love to lead the division, even momentarily.  Not bad for the worst team in the league, right Matt Barnaby?
