This rational because of the 'code' of the NHL fighter. Bigger player beats up one on smaller teammates, then I am going to beat someone up on the other team.
He is making logical sense because he believes and follows the 'code'

But that's never been the code. Never. The Code is here:

McSorley, the Kings fighter, takes a run at the Leafs star. Clark, the Leafs fighter, goes after McSorley. Clark didn't wait until the next time he was on the ice with Gretzky and punch him in the face. The idea that the "code" is "You hit our star, therefore I'm justified in doing whatever I want to whoever I want" has no basis in the history of the league.

I'm not saying he is right. I'm saying this is what he believes the code to be. He obviously felt justified in going after Kessel or whoever he lined up with.
He is an idiot but he felt justified in his actions.

Then I suppose where I'm not following is why John Scott's personal justifications matter at all. If someone's personal justification is irrational(like, say, attributing actions to a "code" that in fact expressly rule out doing what he did) then how does it make them sound reasonable.

"Sure, I blew up that restaurant but they charged me for two iced teas when I only had one" may be a crazy person's justification but it isn't rational.

He was. That's why Tropp got knocked the eff out. It's not Devane's job to protect idiots.

It is his job to know where and when to fight, and that was neither. When a little guy that just scored a goal to get his team back in the game comes at you, you skate away.

Is it his job? I'll like to point out that this is the pre-season and both Tropp & Devane are "fighting" for a job. If it was a vet with a spot locked sure I'll agree with you, but in this case most guys are going fight.

I like how carter ashton is starting to play tougher.  I think his tough play this preseason has earned him a sport.  Certainly about colborne.  Considering how old colborne now is, he should be traded.

I agree. Carter makes the team, Colborne is gone by the deadline.

I am glad Kessel only got 3 pre-season games and will not miss any regular season games, but Carlyle will need to give some protection to Kessel on the ice.  Perhaps an enforcer on the blue line?  I just think that other teams are going to be targeting Kessel.

How many guys who can fight were dressed for the Buffalo game? At some point, the team's got to dress the guys that won't give up 35 shots a night.

From Sportsnet:
...there was a feeling resembling giddiness in Toronto?s dressing room after a line brawl that included new goaltender Jonathan Bernier trading punches with counterpart Ryan Miller. The Leafs were proud of the way they defended one another against a division rival they will see on five more occasions in the regular season, starting with a home-and-home series Nov. 15 and Nov. 16.

The fact Toronto must go more than three weeks without Clarkson will certainly hurt. The team?s 11th game won?t come until Oct. 25 in Columbus

.?That?s a big loss,? Kessel said.
