Predators vs. Maple Leafs - Mar. 22nd. 7:00pm - SN, TSN 1050

This has been the approach the whole season. No wonder they're so bad at 6 on 5.

A few games the same thing was going on and Berube finally had to pull the top guys off ... and Holmberg promptly tied the game up. Any fresh legs are better than the superstars running on fumes.

Disappointing that Willy didn't take charge, because he should have had plenty of gas in the tank.

in other news Florida lost, Tampa lost, Colorado blew a 4-1 lead to Montreal.

This WAS yet another 3 games in 4 nights/4 in 6 so the bullshit schedule does play a factor. I just hate how aggressively they let up after the first period
They killed themselves. That was the worst game for Tanev/McCabe. Oh well, back home to play Philly.

Duh? But how many of the Leaf top players are out of the lineup tonight? None and they still shit the bed against a non-playoff team. Same old story with this group, no matter how some of you brainiacs try to spin it.
I’m not spinning anything. I asked a question based on a comment and you spun it out of control.

Can we stop calling a line with David Kampf on it a shutdown line. He's a good defensive player but that line is not a shutdown line.
They still have the problem of - what the hell are they trying to do with the bottom 6? It's a collection of spare parts with no identity. They've never solved the problem of what those lines are supposed to accomplish. They don't really have a shut-down line, they don't have a crash/bang line, they sort of have a scoring line with Domi and Robertson but they are too bad defensively to be trusted (plus who is the fit on LW). And I have a hard time believing that someone like Steeves with his 33 AHL goals couldn't provide more than Holmberg.

They've had some juice these past few games and deserve credit for that.

That being said, games like tonight are why I don't expect them to do anything in the playoffs.

This is a very poor Nashville team and yet the Leafs got absolutely caved in despite a two goal lead.

We can make allowances for them again, but it's symptomatic of the same issues they've had for approaching a decade now.

There is a fatal character flaw in the makeup of this team that does not allow them to dig in when the tide turns against them.

I hate the thought of losing guys of the skill of Marner and Tavares for nothing in free agency, but it might need to be a serious consideration if they want to change the chemistry of this team.

If they retain Marner and Tavares, they need to move out several of the depth pieces and find guys that are just horrible to play against for the opposition.

Skill takes you 90% of the way, but Will pushes you over the line and this mix of players has consistently lacked that 10%.

Yea the bottom 6 is really just a concoction of players that don't fit or accomplish anything. Domi keeps rotating roles, and is so horrible defensively that he needs at least 1 huge defensive anchor on the wing, but the 2 best defensive forwards both play on line 1. Kampf is in no man's territory between 3C and 4C, and doesn't specifically fit either, particularly in conjuction with the supporting bottom 6 wingers. Steeves is on pace for a 50+ goal season but can get nary a look on the roster. There just seems to be a whole lot of deck chair shuffling and not much of a plan, which, for a team that is desperate for a long playoff run, is a tad concerning.

This is the concerning part, and it has been an issue regardless of the caliber of their opponent; with the lead the team's philosophy changes and they stop any semblance of an offence and immediately attempt to protect their lead. I don't know how much of this is the group trying to adjust to the change in philosophy, an indictment of the system/philosophy itself, or just the simple inability to adhere to this scheme, but unless their goaltending stands on their head for however long is left in the game while they are in front, standing back and letting their opponent shoot endlessly isn't a recipe for success.

Pretty disappointing result. Tampa & Florida lose and they can't put away the Preds to take advantage after taking a 2-0 lead.

Another confounding thing:
Jarnkrok, who has been decent as a Pker in the past, returns (with an apparent lost step in his skating)
They add PKers Laughton and Carlo
PK should have improved. Earlier in the season, it was top 6 or so.
They have a good PK coach in Lane Lambert
Their PK has given up a league leading 7 goals since the trade deadline - a terrible ~68%

They have 12 regular season games left and they have not got their act together.
I'll always cheer them on but I can't say that I have a good feeling about this.
