Leiweke on @timandsid talks Shanahan: "I'm amazed at his focus and energy. He's like a sponge."

Why do I think I'm soon going to be seeing 'shopped pix of Shanahan in square pants?

SpongeBren ShanPants?

Leiweke on Leafs: Decisions coming soon, based on Shanahan's evaluation

So what I read from this:

Carlyle stays, Kulemin is gone, Kadri is gone, Gardiner is gone.  Clarkson gets a defined role on the 2nd line and Orr gets promoted to the 3rd line.

Unless your name is Randy Carlyle and you need to look for a job.

Considering Carlyle gets paid for the upcoming season regardless of whether or not he's back behind the Leafs' bench, there's not necessarily a ton of urgency for that, either.

Considering Fletcher is the guy who traded Alex Steen for Lee Stempniak and traded three picks so they could move up to draft Luke Schenn then I wouldn't be too sure that it would have made a huge difference.

Also, looking at the 2008 draft, considering the returns would have likely been picks in the back half of the 1st round, I'm not sure the Leafs really missed out on all that much - especially looking at the 2 picks that were most strongly rumoured to have been heading to the Leafs (San Jose's and Philly's). Maybe they take Eberle with the Flyers' pick and maybe they take Carlson with the Sharks', but, there's really not much to be had there that's better than what the Leafs have now. Maybe they could have used those picks to trade up a little higher and get Pietrangelo, but, I have my doubts about that.

and steen failed to show his 40 goal scoring form in the playoffs.  That season is a flash in the pan in the same vein of Jason Blake.  Mind you, there could have been a much greater return on those two if you wanted to trade them.  As I recall every trade rumor to Toronto involved them.

Yeah what a bum.

Yeah. Who needs a 20 goal, 50 point, excellent defensive centre on their roster when you have have a guy like Lee Stempniak?

Yeah stempy sucks.  But he too had a flash in the pan season of 27 goals and another of 28.

John Tortorella could replace Carlyle.  I heard he plays the 4th line a bit.....[/sarcasm]

What is Shanahan waiting for I wonder??

ken Hitchcock!!!!!!

He still has a job.  Should the blues fire him for bad goaltending?

If it benefits our Leafs then yes.

No I guess not. But with that thinking, Carlyle should be safe because the Leafs had "Bad Defense".

Please don't go there.  :(

McClellan could be fired, so the Leafs could continue hiring former Shark coaches who have talented teams, but cannot get those teams deep into the playoffs.

This is interesting....

No head coach in NHL history has won more games in their first four seasons behind the bench than the 195 collected by Todd McLellan.

Friedman sure making it sound like McLellan will be fired:

@Hope_Smoke

Friedman "I don't think you do these things [fire McLellan], or should do these things, 24 hours after the kind of defeat they've just had"

‏@Hope_Smoke

Freidman "the one thing about Wilson is, he always moves slow with his coaches"

@Hope_Smoke

Friedman "I'm not sure Wilson is going to wait a while this time. I think we can all see that the move is coming."

@Hope_Smoke

Friedman (when asked if both Wilson and McLellan survive this) "I don't think so"

I was thinking more along the lines of him being available to teams who may be looking right now.  Personally, I would gladly take being in limbo if it paid me a comparable salary.  8)
