Well the current team is pulling the same 18 wheeler trick.

Goaltending isn't helping.  In the 5 straight losses, 4 of those games were by 1 goal (Washington scored an empty net goal to win 4-2).  So even just league average goaltending by Reimer would have gotten the Leafs at least  1 and maybe 2 points in some of those games.  Not like he has to steal the show, just don't allow softies.

How many points would league average goaltending have lost us this season?

And this affects Reimer's last 5 starts how?

League average goaltending would mean the Leafs would have allowed 15-20 more goals over the season so far. So, 8-12 points would be my guess.

You have to expect periods of below average goaltending, especially when you've been riding above league average goaltending for so long.  Goaltending is up and down.  Bernier had a stretch of subpar play in December.  It's the teams fault for having itself in a position where it cannot withstand it.  This was all predicted, Mirtle had an article saying they could not keep allowing so many shots against because they were wasting excellent goaltending by not performing better while receiving it.  Unfair to heap scorn on Reimer for this stretch.

This is worth a read on Reimer, and goalies in general: http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2014/3/24/5538522/Why-Is-James-Reimer-Struggling

Because if it wasn't partly because of Reimer's play earlier this season (although of course Bernier deserves more credit for the teams goaltending) we wouldn't even be in a playoff race to begin with. Blaming the Leafs current situation on Reimer is like blaming it on Kessel because he only has 3 goals in 11 games.

If we're looking for a stretch of games to blame this seasons (possible) failure on we need to look at that 4 regulation wins in 30+ games "slump" that the team went through. Not this.

Except for as true as that is the team was in a very good position six games ago. We can perform an autopsy on the season as a whole when everything is said and done but there's no denying that even a middling performance over the last week would have the team in good playoff position.

Yeah. That 11-16-5 stretch from November 2nd through January 9th really torched whatever margin of error the Leafs had for the rest of the season.

No, I agree. I don't think we should ignore this stretch entirely. But I don't think Reimer should be the primary recipient of the blame. Instead we should look at why the team couldn't steal 1 or maybe 2 points in those games to bail their goaltending out. And I think the answer to that question would line up nicely to the teams struggles in Nov/Dec/Jan.

Yeah, I don't think so either. This has been a team failure and all aspects of the team deserve their share of the blame.

Pretty much.

I've never liked RC either when winning or losing.

He's a dinosaur. I can't fathom his defensive system (a joke), his use of the bench in terms of utilizing the proper players and lines - no 4th line - not even trying to develop a useful 4th line, the lack of accountability to ALL the players not just Gardiner or Kadri.

Even Cox is defending him on twitter continually. That Cox who would even make up crap to slag the Leafs - and now he's an apologist for RC.

In previous years the blood was running from the media attacks and now - a quiet mumble mumble grumble is all you hear.

Of course most of the media draws a paycheque of some level from the team owners. Coincidence? I doubt it.

I don't like how Carlyle publicly criticized Reimer after the Kings game.  In my opinion, Reimer kept the Leafs in that game stopping every shot he faced.  Since that criticism Reimer has sucked and plays like he wants out.  All Carlyle had to do was keep his mouth shut and save the criticism for the dressing room, not in public.

I know others criticize Carlyle for his defensive system but that is unfair because the Leafs do not have a defensive system.  Please fire RC now!

Im not saying I believe this to be the case, but I wonder if Carlyle's comments were meant to light a fire under Reimer and get him motivated to play hard with Bernier out. If that was the case, it certainly had the opposite effect.

Carlyle gets paid to be involved with the Leafs.  Fans on the other hand...

RC comes across as a blue collar, blood and guts type guy. Probably would have a made a great foreman on an assembly line in some Mississauga laminate factory.

I don't want to come across too hard on the guy, but as mentioned in another thread, the Leafs are incapable of playing 60 minutes, 40 minutes are extremely rare. 10 minutes is about average and they can win a lot of regular season games amazingly enough with only that. Hooray for above average goaltending.

I don't know what that's about, but I have to think it can be fixed by someone who has information on the cause and an idea how to address it. Ideally the coach, but the Leafs have been doing this pattern for 2 years.

From an outsiders point of view, there is also no bench leadership. I don't know if this is part of the trouble in regards to the team showing up for 10 minutes a night, but it can't help.

The players seem decent enough, we complain about defence but I think most of us here know that defence is about all 5 guys on the ice, not just 2. Therefore it's a strategic and/or psychological issue. Maybe there is too much of a gap between the mentality of RC and his players?

Why does any other team have the ability to play a complete game from time to time(no matter the roster) but we simply cannot?

I'm grasping at straws. :P

If Carlyle gets paid to be involved with the Leafs, someone should be asking for a refund.
It seems the only thing Carlyle really does is ensure there are 6 players on the ice and hope for the best.

I do not see any offensive strategy other than give the puck to the Kessel line and hope they score.  There is no sustained pressure by the offense and there is no defensive system to prevent other teams from taking 40+ shots on Leaf goalies during the game.  I see other teams being able to line change while keeping the puck in the Leafs zone while the 5 Leaf players stuck on the ice cannot even clear the puck out of their own zone or develop a breakout strategy to produce offensive pressure the other way.

So no, Carlyle IMHO is not earning his paycheque.

Hope_Smoke: Kevin Dineen on TSN Radio last week "I coached the Ducks farm team when Carlyle coached the Ducks & we had to mimic his style"

Hope_Smoke: Dineen "I would sit back and think, we'll you have Pronger, Niedermayer and Beauchemin so you can sit there and play that style"

Hope_Smoke: Dineen "sometimes it's based on personnel and my feeling is, you work with what you have"

Hope_Smoke: Dineen "I look at the Leafs as a high end skill team. I don't look at them as a defensive team"

Hope_Smoke: Dineen "If I was coaching against the Leafs the defense is something that I'd like to exploit"
