Rick Nash potentially available

That's sort of a thinly veiled way of saying "If my staying here means I have to play on an awful team for another 6 years, then I want to go somewhere else."

That made me laugh, but it's true. He's a nice guy, but he's trying to think of himself also.

At this point in his career, I would've been worried about his sanity and competitive spirit (not to mention his intelligence) if he didn't request a trade.

Grasping at straws perhaps, but is it possible that Howson wasn't given full autonomy by his ownership to pull the trigger?  They may have already decided to fire him at season's end and that they weren't going to let a lame duck G.M. make the call on the biggest move in franchise history.

I remember reading an article where Rick listed Mats Sundin as his favourite player.

Any report I've seen over the years featuring Nash had him acting in what I interpreted to be an honest and professional manner.  In many ways, I thought he was trying to emulate Mats's captaincy.

The fact that management approached him recently and stated that they were going to rebuild says to me that Columbus wasn't entertaining the notion of a rebuild when Rick signed, therefore I don't fault him for reconsidering his options.

He could have come out today and only said that he was doing what he thought was best for the team.

There was no advantageous reason for him to say that it was "best for his career" also.  I felt he was being honest and sincere in his press conference, like he always has been over the years.

I'm starting to think that he had a high ceiling from ownership and actually thought he could extort it from a buying team. Everyone called his bluff.

I've got a conspiracy theory too.

There were rumours that Nashville put an offer on the table for Nash even though they weren't on the list.

Supposing it were true, it's conceivable they made a huge offer for Nash based on the notion that they have to show Weber and Suter they are serious about being a contender.  Columbus could have leveraged this offer towards New York who weren't in a position to offer what Nashville could.

Just a theory.

I don't know. If they want to fire Howson why not do it now? They already have a guy who can step in temporarily at least in Patrick.

Cheap organization?  His contract expires at the end of the year.

I'd think they'd want to pin that firing on the outgoing guy, under their direction of course.

I'm not sure I'd call them cheap. I mean, they signed Wiz to that big contract and took on Carter's. Plus they were paying Ken Hitchcock to do nothing for quite some time. I don't think eating a few months of Howson's contract would have been a big deal. They could have still had him scout or do another role for the team until it expired.

Didn't mean to imply cheap from the standpoint of unwilling to spend money...just why bother firing him simply because.  I don't think another GM was going to trick someone into drastically overpaying this deadline.  No big deals happened all year long.  I think any remotely attentive owner would have noticed that.  I think they are probably going to get a better package at the draft...not in terms of players/picks being better per say, but just that they will know what they are getting.  Eg.  Burke offers up Kulemin + Schenn + 1st or something like that.  Columbus would know if the Leafs were giving them a lottery pick vs. a 6-8th seed.

Fair enough. I still think that Howson will be the GM of the Blue Jackets throughout the summer and into next season at the very least. It wouldn't have made sense for ownership to let him make the Carter and Vermette trades if they had already marked him as a lame-duck GM.

DarrenDreger: Don't know details, but indications are NYR made a mammoth offer for Rick Nash today and CBJ declined.  #tradecentre

According to Larry Brooks, this is the offer the Rangers made:

Brandon Dubinsky
Tim Erixon
J.T. Miller
Christian Thomas
2012 first-round selection

... and this is what Columbus wanted:

Brandon Dubinsky
Ryan McDonagh or Michael Del Zotto
Derek Stepan or Carl Hagelin
Chris Kreider
2012 first-round selection

Columbus' counter-offer or wishlist is insane. That'd be like the Leafs offering Kulemin, Gardiner, Frattin, Kadri, and a 1st.

Scott Howson realizes he wasn't playing NHL12 right?

That, and he also thinks Rick Nash is actually 1988 Wayne Gretzky

He must be hanging around Doug MacLean who would willingly give up any package of players for Nash including Kessel and Lupul.

If that was CBJ's counteroffer then it's obvious that they wanted the moon and sixpence or nothing.  Which you can't blame them.  Nash is the face of the franchise and dealing him, while it may be in the best long-term interests of the team, is a big fat admission of multiyear failure.  Although the fanbase is no doubt already aware of that.
