That's sort of a thinly veiled way of saying "If my staying here means I have to play on an awful team for another 6 years, then I want to go somewhere else."

That made me laugh, but it's true. He's a nice guy, but he's trying to think of himself also.

They may have already decided to fire him at season's end and that they weren't going to let a lame duck G.M. make the call on the biggest move in franchise history.

I don't know. If they want to fire Howson why not do it now? They already have a guy who can step in temporarily at least in Patrick.

Cheap organization? His contract expires at the end of the year.
Didn't mean to imply cheap from the standpoint of unwilling to spend money...just why bother firing him simply because. I don't think another GM was going to trick someone into drastically overpaying this deadline. No big deals happened all year long. I think any remotely attentive owner would have noticed that. I think they are probably going to get a better package at the draft...not in terms of players/picks being better per say, but just that they will know what they are getting. Eg. Burke offers up Kulemin + Schenn + 1st or something like that. Columbus would know if the Leafs were giving them a lottery pick vs. a 6-8th seed.CarltonTheBear said:L K said:CarltonTheBear said:Peter D. said:Grasping at straws perhaps, but is it possible that Howson wasn't given full autonomy by his ownership to pull the trigger? I'm not sure I'd call them cheap. I mean, they signed Wiz to that big contract and took on Carter's. Plus they were paying Ken Hitchcock to do nothing for quite some time. I don't think eating a few months of Howson's contract would have been a big deal. They could have still had him scout or do another role for the team until it expired.

That, and he also thinks Rick Nash is actually 1988 Wayne Gretzky
