Seattle Expansion Draft

Ok Unless Seattle said they want Dermott or Kerfoot and plan to take them already. Why trade for McCann and potentially lose assets
Because you get a replacement for Kerfoot if they go that way. If Seattle takes McCann the Leafs essentially get to keep their roster and only lose Hallander and a 7th. It's a pretty smart move by Dubas.

Maybe the money doesn?t play out I think I had just been interested in keeping both Kerfoot and McCann.  I?m nonplussed about losing Holl/Dermott at this point.

Although I guess it is better to look at it as Seattle picking Hallander and a 7th if they take McCann and that would be a good loss from the Leafs perspective

I think I'd rather the Leafs had kept Hallander and the pick and lost Kerfoot or Dermott.

But my hunch is this means they know Seattle wanted Kerfoot and will take him.

Exactly...That would be a good loss being able to keep Dermott, Kerfoot. I kind of think they want Kerfoot though but we'll see.

They had to have known Seattle wouldn't take McCann. Couldn't they have worried about this deal afterward? What are the chances Seattle takes McCann from Pitt and Kerfoot? I dunno... Let's see how it shakes out.

Yeah I think no matter what happens Dubas played it pretty smart there.

BTW if I were the Kraken I absolutely would take Price.  He provides an instant jolt of feel-good winnableness that is important to offer to a new fan base.

He just had a great playoff run but his regular season numbers are meh the last few years.  You wanna pay $10.5M for a goalie who may be average at best?  Other cheaper goalie options out there for Seattle

Honestly, I think I would too if I was trying to be competitive right away. He's a big name and for all the talk of the bad contract, and it's not good, a new team that's spending wisely can probably afford to have a bad deal like that on the books, at least until they have a player of their own who needs to get paid like that.

It's up in five years and if you get even three years of pretty good goaltending out of it...eh, it's not a terrible idea. That said, I don't think Montreal leaves him exposed if they think there's a shot it happens.

Also, he?s 33, with 5 more years left on that contract. I have to imagine Seattle feels they?ll need to use that cap space better in the last couple years of that contract.

I don't know, to even get to where Vegas is with regards to the Cap you really have to be aggressive in spending on free agents, not to mention having a bunch of your own guys in fairly immediate need of big extensions. If you even have a slightly more patient approach the idea that you'll be in real need of cap space that soon seems unlikely.

I think you're right.

Dubas is tight with Francis, and Hakstol sort of. It looks derpy on paper, but this is Kerfoot?s moment to shine.

Also, can we interest Seattle in Justin Holl for Dylan DeMelo after the draft

Who knows? Anything is possible.

Seattle can potentially be a lot better than I figured they would be a week ago. The question now is if they'll chose to go down that route or really try to value cap space a little more and start a little slower.

I think it can be as simple as a gentlemen's agreement between Dubas and Seattle about who they would take, given that the Leafs didn't stand in the way of Hakstol getting the HC position.

Contractually the Leafs might not have had much of a choice there. I don't really think Seattle would be doing the them any free favours but yeah they might have been a little more open about who they were interested in because of that relationship.

Great job, NHL.

When Dom did a mock draft about a month ago with the more expected protected lists he came up with a roster of 95 points. So GMs galaxy braining their decisions gave them an extra 10 points (according to his model).

If Seattle doesn?t want to contend but wants to get lots of assets just pick a lot of the big money people and trade them with retained salary for big asset returns
