Seattle Expansion Draft

If Seattle does go for a lot more of the more higher priced players like Tarasenko, Domi, Gourde, Giordano, Bishop then a guy like Kerfoot at $3.5mil might not end up being as attractive since they'll need a number of cheaper guys to balance that out.

I have a hunch Kerfoot is gone. McCann is his replacement.

Kerfoot might not mind going to Seattle since his family is from Vancouver.

I?d take my chances on Price regardless, and LTIR him.

I?d grab Kahkonen too to set up a nice 1-2 punch.  I?d have to assume there is a side deal so Seattle doesn?t take him, otherwise I don?t understand that decision one bit on Minny?s end.

I mean, the thing with them taking Price is that optics are especially important to a startup.  There are lots of good rational reasons for them to pass, but on the other hand it's hard to say to people you are trying to hook, "Yeah hes probably a Hall of famer but look at all this value with these other guys you never heard of."

As people have said though, Seattle isn't Vegas. It's a big sports town hurting for a winter sport that doesn't need to be sold as hard on hockey. Expansion teams usually have people excited in the first few years just via existing.

so.. Seattle could select Price... flip him to the Leafs... who put him on LTIR and get enough cap room to sign Dougie Hamilton... get through the regular season with Campbell and Hutchison.. then activate Price for the playoffs a la Kucherov... :)

There's that, as well as the fact that nothing attracts fans more than a winning team. They'll get to know the players if/when the team is good. Until then, to get real value out of someone with name recognition - that player would have to be able to bring the excitement in a way a goalie really doesn't. With the way Price has played for the last few regular seasons, I wouldn't have a ton of confident in him being able to provide more to the team than a combo of the other goalies available and the extra talent they can add with difference in cap.

Price with three of the last four seasons having a sub .910 SV%.  He's been below average in terms of a goaltender to get you to the playoffs the last four years and two of those years he absolutely didn't get his team to the playoffs if not for the special circumstances postseason structure.  I don't think the mystique of Carey Price means all that much to Seattle...certainly not for four more years at 10M in cap hit.  He's about to be 34, missed a big chunk of this season with injury and then supposedly has another potentially significant injury that will require surgery.

If I was them I would rather take the chance on a guy like Ben Bishop if you are going after goaltenders with injury concerns.

MTL: gee, we have to find a suitor for Jake, or else we could lose him
Price: I volunteer as tribute (he literally signed the NMC waiving ahead of the deadline because MTL didn't ask)

MTL: We couldn't figure anything out with Jake, so thank you Carey, we will take you up on your offer to be exposed. I don't think they'll take you with the contract you earned.

SEA: Wow, Carey Price, eh? We will consider this wonderful happenstance. Price's wife is from Washington, dontchaknow, and we would love to have such a wonderful person headlining our new franchise

MTL: *Sweating*  Uh, well... actually... uh... his hips and everything are very broken... just falling right off right now, so he'll likely miss next season, yeah.

I know you have to send medical reports along with the expansion lists but the league has to look into this if both Price and Weber are ready to go on Day 1 of the season.  It does seem kind of convenient that a story leaks out about them both having major injuries just before they get announced to be on the unprotected list.

The fact the Bishop did not play at all this past season is concerning, but he's definitely been the better goalie when has been healthy in the last few years, and comes with a much more manageable contract. Grab him, Driedger, and Kahkohen, and Seattle would be pretty set in net for less than what Price alone would cost.

Draft Price. Retain 50% of his cap hit (*$10 million bonus is due in September) Trade him to a team looking to win now for a forward/defence prospect, top goalie prospect, and 2022 + 2023 1st round picks.

No one is giving up that package for Price.  Goalies don't get traded for anywhere near that kind of value.

A pick and prospect maybe but that's just not the value goalie ever go for.

This, and the fact that I doubt Seattle is going to want $5.25M in dead cap space on the ledger before they've even played a game - especially 5 year's worth. If he had 1 or 2 years left on his contract, maybe, but it's too much for too long.

Yeah, I get that but you?re paying for the money retention too.

As a fan of the Leafs, I?m interested.

So something like Amirov, Niemela, Woll, and 2022 1st round pick for Price at $5m a season.
