Easiest negotiation of Dubas' career

Crosby's AAV has been 8.7M since 2008 when he signed a 5 year deal coming off his ELC. He is on year 12 of his current (mega)contract. This extension is a 35+ contract.

I don't know what I think about this relative to Tavares? Making the assumption Tavares would sign under market value IS an assumption. He might ask for the moon.

I would say the longer the term the lower the cap hit and vice versa. I would guess something like $5M x 4 or $6M x 3 or $7M x 2.

He should do a 3-year 9.1M deal at 3.03M AAV and be lauded as a selfless hero. This would net out to about 8.61M over 10 years with the Leafs, which seems quite fair for that span. Then he can chip in 910k one-year deals thereafter as long as he's game.

I think Crosby is more of a unique case.  He got to do another number contract and it pushes him to 40 and likely the end of his career.  Tavares with be 35 so is probably looking to play for more than 2 years but is also declining far more than Crosby has.

Very much Crosby being a unique case. He'd be able to get more on the open market - or even from the Pens, if that's what he wanted.

He got there by being the best player and getting paid like it.
In his twilight years, leaving his GM a few bucks to get him some help, doesn't seem unreasonable for both parties.

None of the core 4 here were in that position when Dubas haggled his deal with them.
Their stats are all in the high rent district - not that far out of alignment with the rest of the league. They got close to top dollar like Crosby did at that age

Interesting note about Crosby's expiring 12-year deal, he didn't take a raise off his previous 5-year deal, and the 12-year deal he signed didn't make him the highest paid player in the league.

At the time of signing the contract Crosby's career average of 1.4 points a game was 4th best all-time behind only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Mike Bossy.

Clearly money was left on the table and the Penguins benefitted from this ever since.

Except that he had played less than half of the games over the last 2 seasons prior to that dealing with concussion problems (101 games missed due to concussions). That was $104 million contract gamble with a very serious concussion history. The insurance companies wouldn't touch it. They had to give something up for that.

This has absolutely 0 impact on the Tavares ask.  Crosby has been underpaid a good portion of his career, he's the only player that seemingly doesn't mind taking a team friendly discount, and doesn't care if the NHLPA has an issue with him not driving the market up.  I really don't think he's used as a comparable because of how out of whack his salary is with the rest of his peers.

I wasn?t trying to start a conversation or debate the point. I personally don?t think there?s any point of comparison here as Crosby is in a class of his own. 

I was just throwing an offhand remark that the talking heads will use this in some manner in a Marner conversation, and I did hear it a few times on the radio yesterday.

This has absolutely 0 impact on the Tavares ask.  Crosby has been underpaid a good portion of his career, he's the only player that seemingly doesn't mind taking a team friendly discount, and doesn't care if the NHLPA has an issue with him not driving the market up.  I really don't think he's used as a comparable because of how out of whack his salary is with the rest of his peers.

I don't know that Crosby really took a huge hometown discount on his last contract. His contract was 13.5% of the salary cap. Matthews is 15% of the salary cap. I think the length was the discount but when you're talking 12 year contracts, the player is gaining a lot of security. Especially a player like Crosby who was out 113 games in the previous 3 seasons. He missed 101 games due to concussion/whiplash. It was a bit of a stretch that he'd play all 12 years. The fact that at the end, he's still able to sign 2 more years at 8.7m per year is incredible.

I'm not taking away from Crosby. The fact that at 38 people are calling this another hometown discount is a testament to how great he is.

It's wild to me that Sidney Crosby has been playing for just a $3mil salary for the past 2 seasons, and will agaim this coming season. The Pens will possibly miss the playoffs all 3 times. Meanwhile Sid scored 93-94 points in those seasons.
