Sundin update

Story about Domi's kid
... very, very loosely related to Sundin - didn't think it was worth it's own thread but it's a nice story

Indeed it is.
It seems crazy that he can wear an insulin pump during games but I guess it's not dangerous to do so.

Sounds like a very down-to-earth kid.  At such a young age, he's already learned of the important things in life and understanding the scope of his problem in comparison to others.

Sundin talks a bit about not being in the daily stomach churner. It would be nice if the Leafs could hire him to do something, anything, just to have him around and give him an excuse to buy a condo or something...

It just baffles me that there are still so-called fans of the Leafs who harbor ill-will towards this guy.  I'm not naive, nobody is perfect, but every public utterance Sundin makes just reinforces my respect for him.  He (and Kabs, for that matter) wanted nothing more than to finish out as a Leaf, and to win a Cup with the Leafs.  Yet he harbors no vindictiveness at all.

He seems like a person I would genuinely like to be around.

And good grief, Brian Burke, I hope you are paying attention and embrace Mats' offer to "do anything" for the team, right now.

I can't wait until I can change the caption under my
name. It will be a great night when Mats gets his banner risen to the top of the ACC rafters.
Rumour was that was to happen this season, was it not?
Berger reported that it was going to happen early this season. That's looking doubtful, unless they're being
sneaky about it.

No, not this season.  Early next season.  (I posted this item at the beginning of the thread topic).

Here it is again:

As per......  http://communities.sportsnet.ca/thread/52068

Which was in August, next season then would mean this current season now, would it not?

I'd prefer next season as I am tied up with work pretty much all season and can only make it to Toronto once this season compared to 6 times last season :(

I'd definitely welcome him around the ACC on a daily basis. I'd make him director of player personnel or something to that effect.

The blog being referred to on that board was posted late last season, making his reference to "next season" this season.

That's a pretty big title for a guy with zero experience. I mean Gilmour came in with a much smaller title, no? "Special Assistant" or something like that? If there is a gig for Mats to be had, I'd like to start him with a smaller task and see what happens.

I see.  Early 2012 would mean around January, February or possibly March at the 'latest'.

Down memory lane.....

A happy Mats, indeed!

Sure, but really who cares what his title is? I'm sure there is enough management around to insulate him, even if he is totally inept, which I don't think he would be anyway. It's not like he'd be making decisions alone or ones that would really effect the organization. Special assistant sounds honorary or something, like he wouldn't really be working for the team.

Exactly. What his title is wouldn't matter, his responsibilities would.

What a guy Kaberle is, too - telling Sundin he wished he had won the Cup in Toronto.

His good friend Tomas Kaberle faced the same decision last winter when the Maple Leafs asked the defenceman to waive his no-trade right to go to the Boston Bruins. After holding out for a while, Kaberle agreed and wound up winning a Stanley Cup as a rental player before moving on to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Sundin said Kaberle told him ?he wished he won the Cup for the Toronto Maple Leafs.?

You know... that quote kinda made me sad.

ITA and all the naysayers can, you know what.....

Gosh, I miss the Big Guy so much.  The video of him at Sick Kids was awesome.  He was, is and always will be, my absolute favourite Leaf and just an all around great person.

Agreed. Two guys who obviously loved the heck out of this team, but unfortunately never got the chance to go all the way with them. It also hurts a little to see such loyal Leafs have their reputations tarnished a little by some fans at the end of their time with the team.
