The 2014-2015 Toronto Raptors Thread: Why Not Us?

The Raptors Terence Ross underwent ankle surgery (in California) Friday, done to remove bone spurs and the like.  He will rehab in Toronto.

Didn't know where to place this:

Golden States Warriors Stephen Curry and his Toronto connection...

So the Bulls fired Tom Thibodeau.  Is he enough of an improvement on Casey for the Raptors to consider making a play for him...

The Raps took Delon Wright, a big PG out of Utah, with the #20 pick.

They also traded Grievis Vasquez to Milwaukee for the 42nd pick and a 2017 1st round pick (LA Clippers).  The 1st round pick is lottery protected for 3 years but I would imagine that the Clippers will still be a playoff team two years from now.

The Raptors drafted Norman Powell with that 42nd pick.  A 6'4" SG from UCLA.  Both players are 4-year veterans from college basketball so I would imagine that they both likely find themselves in the rotation.

In the next two drafts the Raptors have 4 1st round picks and 3 2nd round picks:

2016 - Their own 1st rounder and the lesser pick of Denver/New York (both likely lottery), New York's 2nd round pick and their own 2nd round pick
2017 - Their own 1st round pick and LA Clipper's 1st round pick, their own 2nd round pick

Raptors will be adding former NBAer Jerry Stackhouse as part of the coaching assistant staff:

Michael Grange  @michaelgrange
Can confirm that Dwane Casey has rounded out his coaching staff with pending addition of NBA vet Jerry Stackhouse

Stackhouse is familiar with Toronto, having established a base here with his AAU basketball club, and is also familiar (via twitter) with some current Raptors.

Toronto Raptors Summer League roster (so far):

PG Delon Wright
*PG Phil Greene IV
SG Normal Powell
SF Bruno Caboclo
SF DeAndre Daniels
*PF/C Michale Kyser
C Bebe Nogueira

*Denotes Summer League invite.  There is a little more on the line for the players on the Raptors summer league team as there is a new D-league affiliate for the Toronto in Mississauga so a little more opportunity for professional basketball.  I'm pretty excited for that as now the Raptors can actually develop players like Caboclo instead of having them sit on the bench behind other prospects.

I like the player, the cap hit is a bit to swallow.  Ross is getting squeezed out.

The money getting tossed around is unreal. Anthony Davis for 5 years/145. Dragic for 5/90.

There were rumblings that Demar is going to ask for 25M for his next deal.  That scares the heck out of me.  The Raptors really need to shore up their big-man rotation but I do like their overall depth.  The defense should be much better this year.

Raptors sign Bismack Biombo to a 2-year contract to play backup to Valanciunas.  Good defensively and a bit of a rim protector.

The Lakers sign Lou Williams.  The only big downside to that is the Lakers have cap space and we don't get an asset for Williams as part of a sign and trade.

The Raptors signed Canadian Cory Joseph (PG/SG) as he was a casualty of the Spurs signing Lamarcus Aldridge.

4 years 30 million.  A little rich for my liking.

Every deal being signed is rich for my liking. 5 years 80 million for Reggie Jackson? This is straight up crazy town.

There may be a reason why the Raptors gave Joseph the money & contract they signed him to:

The Raptors love Joseph?s defensive acumen. By their analysis he immediately becomes their best perimeter defender. Moreover they love the humility he brings to the job and his simple passion for his craft.

The term of his deal extends past that of all-star Kyle Lowry?s, who will likely opt out of his contract two summers from now. While no one within the organization is prepared to declare Joseph ready to push Lowry as a starter, the dollars and term they gave him suggest they are betting that he?s still improving and could provide them an option there in time.

Raptors now have an excellent trio on the backcourt -- Carroll, Biyombo, and Joseph:

The moves make the Raptors a longer, more tenacious team defensively and gives them quality depth in their backcourt.

Upfront, they'll likely be seeking more depth (especially sans power forward Amir Johnson to free agency):

It also leaves them with some questions up front ? replacing Johnson at power forward will be a challenge given the dearth of quality at the position on the free agent market. Pat Patterson will fill Johnson?s role now with Ujiri likely looking to add more frontcourt quality via the trade market.

The DeAndre Jordan Clippers-Mavs scenario is reaching ultimate levels of hilarity.  He gets cold feet on leaving the Clippers but after reconsidering schedules another meeting with the Mavs...and then refuses to answer their phone calls or talk to his agent.  Meanwhile Doc Rivers and several of the Clippers players are hanging out in his house waiting for midnight.
