So, probably prohibitive for Toronto then?

Beyond prohibitive. Considering the whole situation in Columbus with Howson and everything, it would probably have to be a Gilmour to the Leafs-esque win for the Jackets, and, considering they'll almost certainly be trading the best player in the deal . . .

Well, that are locked into a #1 centre for 10 more years.

But a #1 centre who:

A) They're open to trading
B) Has value
C) Has played a lot of RW in his time in the league

They're not going to build their team around Jeff Carter.

So we'll go with 'no' then?

I know the situations are a bit different but could we say the same/similar to and or about Staal, the Anaheim boys, Parise... the whole lot of them?

The Playboy definition of 'hope springs internal' may apply in a mild-ish way, can we just take the pill already? ;)

Staal is probably the same situation, yeah, but the others . . . in Anaheim, Murray's job doesn't appear to be as openly on the line and someone like Ryan isn't the face of the franchise (though, Getzlaf and/or Perry might be), and, with Parise, he's an impending UFA, so, Lou may have to bite the bullet there if he doesn't feel confident about getting a new contract done - though, as long as they're in playoff contention, he's not likely to be moved. Of all the big names rumoured to be available, the only one who I don't think will cost an astronomical amount is probably Ryan, who would also be my #1 target.

I think I agree with all that, still not very likely though. If it could happen I'd take it in a heart beat from most situations, still.

Fair points.

Yeah, I'm on board... of all the young stars being mentioned, Ryan would be right up there with Getzlaf as my #1 target.

I don't mind Ruutu but is he really a guy who's worth 4-5 mil a year for Toronto? I don't know.

Morrow seems a bit old for the Leafs set up frankly, I like him but he's probably better suited to a contender.

I wasn't sure if you caught that he is making $4.4 MIL this year and this next contract will be a UFA one which might inflate it.

I would prefer Ryan Clowe though.

Clowe would be fantastic but why would SJ move him? He's a key part of their team.

Would anyone trade Schenn for Ruutu and a kicker? - The kicker likely based around Ruutu resigning with the Leafs. Not sure how youl'd structure the pick coming back to the Leafs... Maybe Carolina's 2nd  (which would be near the top of the round) if he walks and something lower if he resigns? Anyone think that would work for both teams?

Nope.

What if we had an option to swap 1st round picks if he walks?.. Not sure what the kicker would be if he resigned...

I still wouldn't.  I don't think he's worth anywhere near Luke Schenn.  He's a good physical player but doesn't produce beyond an "ok" 2nd liner and that has really only happened two times in his career.

If that was the cost I would rather go after cheaper agitating/checking alternatives who don't cost us one of our better young players.  Schenn's value is higher plus would be the chip to have on hand for the "big one" if it comes along.

Maybe if the kicker was Faulk or Dalpe (and, even then, only maybe), but, otherwise, no chance I move Schenn for an impending UFA. Not even a consideration.

Well, maybe Burke could pull something like that off. Like I said, I have no idea what the kicker might be but I don't see Rutherford jumping all over say, Keith Aulie for Ruutu.

Probably know, but, I know for sure that Burke won't be moving Schenn for anything that isn't a guaranteed part of the Leafs' future.

I knew he was a 3.8 cap hit so it was more in reference to that, no way do I want Ruutu in Toronto with a hit much bigger than that, actually even that much bothers me, just doesn't make sense.

I'd prefer Clowe too but I'm sure he'd cost way more if SJ was even interested to start with.

If you could kindly pass on your dealers number it would be greatly appreciated.  He obviously has some quality product in stock.
