First leg of the Round of 16 is done <home team first>...

Lyon 1 APOEL 0
Leverkusen 1 Barca 3
Zenit 3 Benfica 2
Milan 4 Arsenal 0
CSKA 1 Real Madrid 1
Napoli 3 Chelsea 1
Marseille 1 Inter 0
Basel 1 Bayern Munich 0

Surprising wins by Basel (over Bayern), and Napoli (over Chelsea).  Certainly not expected Basel's win at all!

Basel for sure but not much of a shocker for Chelsea - they're having a tough year + Napoli with their big 3 <Cavani / Hamsik / Lavezzi> are in great form. How about CSKA's late equalizer over Madrid!

CSKA over Madrid definitely ranks as totally unexpected, afterall, it was R?al Madrid they were playing against, and not some also- ran.  Whoa!

What a night it was at the Rogers Centre!  Over 45,000 spectators watched, sang, waved placards, irritated LA Galaxy star David Beckham, and did just about anything short of illegal at a soccer game (just kidding!),  as the TFC and the Galaxy tied at 2 apiece.

It was the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final (second leg will be in L.A. next week).  However, for the TFC to advance, they need to win or at least tie by a score of 3 in order to qualify and advance to the next round.

Well, at least, the Rogers Centre took on a 'European-esque' atmosphere similar to those great soccer-mad crowds overseas.  Great work, TFC fans!!

Tough goal to give up though.  Now they have win outright or tie at least 2-2 to stay alive.

That wasn't good 'fanmanship'.  Actually, the can was empty and missed Beckham.  Still, it wasn't right.  Stupid fan.

I couldn't make the game, but watched it afterwards. It was amazing to see over 47 thousand at the 'dome. Kudos to the marketing team and the supporters groups for creating that atmosphere. As for the game itself, TFC looked to feed off that at the start and jumped into a 2 goal lead. It just frustrates me to no end that they gave up the tying goal with 2 minutes left in the 90. Kind of like the Leafs in that regard. Should the teams be tied on total goals after the 2nd leg in LA, then away goals is the tiebreaker and LA has a huge advantage on the front.

Their MLS opener is in Seattle after the trip to LA. If they advance to the CCL semis, then it could be a preview as they will face either Seattle or Santos Laguna of Mexico. TFC would host a semi between March 27th and 29th. Wonder if they would use the 'dome again or face the elements at BMO?

Yes, would be nice if they could use the dome again.  BMO Field is their home field but games of importance could use a larger stadium-like atmosphere.  With the proper marketing and publicity, the TFC could even play some of their regular-season games there.  Their opponents would have to be a bit known (Galaxy/Beckham), and they could probably attract some 35,000+ fans there.

Of course, if the TFC were to improve this year (put up a winning record), they wouldn't have much trouble filling out a larger segment of either of the two buildings.

F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C!!

TFC advances to the CONCACAF semi-finals with a 2-1 win over the L.A. Galaxy, in California.  The TFC needed to win or tie by 2 or more goals in order to advance past L.A. and on to the semi-finals, and in what will be the first of two match-ups against Santos Laguna (Mexico) later this month, in Toronto.  The second game will be played in Mexico sometime in April.

I absolutely enjoyed watching this game last night. After seeing the own goal tie things up, I was thinking that the tie was over and LA was going to go through. To its credit, TFC didn't fall apart after that goal. They kept pressing and managed the goal by Soolsma that put them through. LA had their chances, but either could not get them on target or were stoned by Kocic. They will still have to improve the back line before facing Santos Laguna. The Mexican side clobbered Seattle 6-1 last night to advance 7-3 on aggregate.

CONCACAF has already released the dates of this semi. TFC hosts the 1st leg on March 28th with the 2nd leg at Estadio Nuevo Corona in Torreon, Mexico on April 4th. I'm hearing already that the TFC leg will be played at BMO Field. Here's hoping for a nice cold breeze off the lake that night for a little home field advantage.

In the English FA Cup today Fabrice Muamba of Bolton Wanderers collapsed during their game at Spurs

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17417973

Medics had to resuscitate him on the pitch and he seemingly still wasn't breathing when put in the ambulance. He is stable but critically ill in hospital now. The game was, naturally, abandoned.

Here's hoping he makes it through this.

Sounds like he suffered some sort of cardiac arrest.  They were electronically trying to revive him.  Poor guy, to have to go through something like that, and clinging for his life.

What caused this in the first place?

Inaugural game for the Montreal Impact at the Big O in Montreal, tying the Chicago Fire 1-1, before a home-opening crowd of 58,000+, in MLS action.

In other MLS action, the Toronto FC lost 3-1 to the Seattle Sounders on the road.  The TFC's home-opener is set for March 24th against the San Jose Earthquakes.

No idea the cause. He was fine one second and collapsed the next. Received CPR for over ten minutes before they got his heart going in the ambulance after about ten minutes. He's still in hospital, critically ill.

There have been incidents similar before in soccer and I know of at least one in Gaelic games here in Ireland. There was also that New York Rangers rookie whose name escapes me.

Just seems to be a tragic case that effects certain young sports men.

Alexei Cherepanov, who unfourtunatley didn't make it.

There was also Sergei Zholtok who died due to heart failure during a game while playing in a Belarussian  league during the lockout.

Jiri Fischer of the Red Wings had a smilar scare, but he made it.

TV has given people a very warped view of how deadly cardiac arrest is.  Depending on the study, the success rates for recovery are as low as 5 percent and can get up to 15-20% survival rate.  You see it on TV and everyone (well nearly everyone) makes it through.  There isn't much you can do when the heart has truly stopped.  I don't think the rates are all that high in the athlete population relative to the average guy/girl on the streets.  It happens from time to time in rec league/beer league hockey just like it does at home.

There are a wide number of things that can cause it (a good number of them tend to be genetic cardiomyopathies that you see in athletic individuals where they just have a weakness in their heart that leads to irregular rhythms/electrical activities).

Just to give an update on Fabrice Muamba. His heart was stopped for around 78 minutes. They shocked him 16 times before it finally restarted.

He has now regained consciousness and is now talking in both French and English to team mates and doctors etc. It seems an incredible recovery and huge credit has to go to the medical staff on the pitch and in the hospitals.

I think there is still a long way and he's still in intensive care but things seem a lot more positive. Whether he'll be able to resume his career or not who knows, but he seems to be battling well.

Great day for the Canadian Men's national soccer team, as they defeated the U.S. By a score of 2-0, in Nashville, Tennessee, in the men's  CONCACAF region Olympic qualifying.  A boost of confidence no doubt, as Canada was led by goals by Lucas Cavallini and Doneil Henry.

Canada's men's under-23 squad has a real chance of advancing to the semi-finals Monday against a Cuban squad that remains winless.

GO CANADA GO!!
